The Skútustaðagígar is a series of pseudo-craters located near Lake Mývatn. Formed by steam explosions when hot lava flowed over wet ground or a lake, these unique geological formations offer a picturesque landscape of small, grassy mounds dotting the area.
Unlike true volcanic craters, Skútustaðagígar craters are not associated with direct volcanic eruptions but were created by the interaction of lava and water.
The area around the craters is ideal for walking and birdwatching, with several trails leading through the craters and around the lake, which is rich in birdlife.
