7 days in Finland

Lapland Winter Magic

Choose the Finland you want to feel: a child’s visit to Santa, a longer Lapland journey with snow and sauna, or the slow light of a summer lake. I’d keep the Arctic days warm and unhurried, treat the northern lights as a possibility, and leave space for the quieter Finnish rituals between the big moments.

Choose the pace before the bookings

Two bases, more Arctic time

Seven saved days, with three nights in Rovaniemi and three in Saariselkä. The northbound move is a real travel day; depart from Ivalo if the flights and transfer work. Treat the northern lights as a possibility, never a promise.

Protect the northbound travel day

Rovaniemi–Saariselkä is about 260 km. Arrange a dated coach or private transfer and confirm luggage, hotel pickup and the last connection. Inari and Siida are a separate excursion north of Saariselkä; the museum is not in the village.

Fit the snow days to your party

Winter brings short daylight and cold outdoor waits. Apukka supplies winter clothing from age two for this husky tour; children ride as passengers. Solo-adult families face specific supervision rules, and infants need an adult passenger. Read the exact booking terms and agree the plan for weather cancellations.

Use the actual attraction calendar

Snowman World currently lists 6 December 2026–17 March 2027, weather permitting. A December–March route label does not guarantee access on every day. Keep Arktikum, a sauna or a quieter local day as alternatives, and check each operator again before travel.

December: choose the attraction dates first

Santa Claus Office is available year-round, but the other Christmas attractions have separate calendars. For winter 2026–27, SantaPark lists 31 October 2026–23 January 2027; Snowman World’s main season is 6 December 2026–17 March 2027, weather permitting. Its pre-season Snow Fun Area is a different offer. For an early-December trip, keep Arktikum or a relaxed village visit as an alternative rather than making the whole stay depend on a snow attraction. Check the exact edition and date before paying.

Fit winter outings to the light and the cold

December and early January have short daylight; later winter gives the snow outings more usable light. Visit Finland gives a broad winter planning range of −10 to −20°C for Rovaniemi, but actual conditions can be warmer or much colder. That range is not a forecast for a particular day or a substitute for a guide’s decision. Confirm clothing, pickup and child participation with each operator, keep warm breaks, and avoid a late aurora search immediately before an early safari. Confirm the northbound transfer before booking a Saariselkä activity on the travel day.

Arriving by train changes the connection, not the saved nights

VR’s Helsinki–Rovaniemi train can bring you to the start of this route. Reserve the train and the station-to-base transfer separately, and confirm what happens before hotel check-in. The seven-day starting plan still has three Rovaniemi nights and three Saariselkä nights; a rail cabin is an additional travel choice, not an automatic replacement for one of those stays. This route ends with an Ivalo-area departure, so compare the complete return rather than assuming a round trip from Rovaniemi.

Your 7-day route at a glance

Explore Finland

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Arrive in LaplandRovaniemi

Plan the day: Fit Arktikum around arrival and the day’s opening hours. Check into the Rovaniemi-area base and keep time for warm clothing and groceries.

If plans change: If the museum is closed or arrival is late, save it for a weather day and rest after the journey.

Things to do

  1. Arktikum1-3h
Day 2Huskies & Northern SkiesRovaniemi

Plan the day: Make the husky outing the main commitment. Keep the evening northern-lights search optional; check pickup, clothing and whether your party can manage a late return.

If plans change: If weather cancels the outing, ask the operator about rescheduling or refund terms. Cloud can hide any aurora; do not promise a sighting.

Things to do

  1. Apukka Husky Adventure4h
  2. Rovaniemi Northern Lights Search4hOptional add-on
Day 3Snow Play & SaunaRovaniemi

Plan the day: Confirm Snowman World is open, then pair a manageable snow-play visit with the separately booked Apukka sauna. These are different locations and reservations.

If plans change: Drop one activity if transfers or cold are tiring. Use an indoor or rest day when snow attractions cannot operate.

Things to do

  1. Snowman World2-4h
  2. Apukka Lakeside Sauna2h
Day 4North to SaariselkäSaariselkä

Plan the day: Use this as the move to Saariselkä, roughly 260 km north of Rovaniemi. Check the coach stop or private transfer all the way to Star Arctic on Kaunispää fell.

If plans change: If weather delays the journey, prioritise reaching your overnight safely. Do not add a fixed evening tour.

Things to do

Keep this day flexible for travel and exploring.

Suggested stay

Day 5Snowshoe the FellsSaariselkä

Plan the day: Travel to Kiilopää for the booked snowshoe outing; it is separate from your felltop hotel. Choose a guided route suited to your fitness and daylight.

If plans change: Follow the guide’s condition advice. A shorter local walk or warm indoor time is a valid replacement.

Things to do

  1. Kiilopää Snowshoe Walk3h

Suggested stay

Day 6Sámi StoriesSaariselkä

Plan the day: Plan a dedicated return journey to Siida in Inari. Check museum hours and both legs of your transport before leaving Saariselkä.

If plans change: If transport or opening hours do not fit, stay local; a museum listing does not create a connection.

Things to do

  1. Siida Sámi Museum2-4h

Suggested stay

Day 7Ivalo DepartureSaariselkä

Plan the day: Arrange the hotel-to-Ivalo Airport transfer for your actual flight. Keep winter road and check-in margin.

If plans change: If leaving from Rovaniemi instead, rebuild this day around the much longer southbound journey.

Things to do

Keep this day flexible for travel and exploring.
