Getting around Patagonia

Choose bus and booked transfers or a rental car around your actual bases. A Chile–Argentina crossing needs its own day plan, and a W Trek needs connections that a car cannot cover.

Make the journey work

Argentina: town-to-town, then trailhead

El Calafate and El Chaltén are separate overnight bases. Match your bus or rental-car journey to the arrival and next hike, rather than adding a full Toro walk before a fixed departure. [5]

Crossing to Chile

Confirm cross-border authorization, insurance and paperwork with the rental company before booking a car. Check the chosen border post’s current hours and entry requirements with the authorities. A domestic rental booking does not establish permission to cross.

The W starts where the road stops

Pudeto is the road-side catamaran departure; Paine Grande and Grey are mountain-trail locations. Arrange the crossing, trail time and first refugio as one plan. [3]

Fuel and margins

CONAF notes no fuel stations in or around Torres del Paine. Fill up before the park approach, and leave margins for wind, gravel, stops and your actual lodge access. [1]

Questions before you go

Can I drive to Refugio Grey?

No. Vértice states its refugios are not road-accessible. Refugio Grey and the road-access Hotel Lago Grey are different places. [3]

Are border hours or bus times confirmed here?

No. Check the exact crossing and service for your travel date before booking the next connection.
