JAPAN · FYNO TRAVEL GUIDES
Split Kyoto into an eastern temple-and-Gion day, an Arashiyama day in the west, and a separate Fushimi Inari or central market visit. Miyama is a countryside excursion, not another city-center stop.

Make the western district the day’s focus. The bamboo path, nearby temples and riverside walks have different entry arrangements and visit lengths.

Before you set off
Choose a district rather than collecting every famous temple. In Gion, follow posted access and photography rules and give residents and working geiko and maiko space. [4]
Use rail where it fits, then walk within a district. Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari and northern temples are not one compact walking circuit. Leave a buffer for buses and crowded approaches. [3]
Central Sanjo and Kawaramachi work for evenings and mixed sightseeing. Kyoto Station favors arrivals and onward trains; Higashiyama favors temple walks. Match the address to your most important day.
