Getting around Japan: trains, luggage and Hokkaido

Use rail and local transport for a focused Honshu city trip. Check Hokkaido’s rural or ski connections separately, and compare passes only after choosing the actual journeys.

Plan your trip

Before you set off

Leave room for the journey

Compare the journeys with the pass

List the intercity trips inside the pass’s validity period and compare their fares with the current pass. Check eligibility, coverage and additional tickets for the services you intend to use. [1]

Keep baggage reservations with the train booking

Some Shinkansen luggage arrangements require a corresponding seat reservation. Read JR Central’s current size and service rules, and confirm hotel storage or forwarding separately. [3]

Choose a northern transport plan

Sapporo city time, a Niseko ski stay and a rural Furano/Biei circuit have different final connections. Do not use a summer drive allowance as a winter transfer promise. [5]

From places to a journey

Routes to consider

Compare all eight routes

Read the day-by-day plan before deciding on your nights. Each route has its own places, travel days and starting length.

Questions before you go

Is a Japan Rail Pass always worth buying?

Compare its current price and coverage with the trips you will actually take. It is not automatically the best value for every city or multi-city itinerary. [1] [2]

Can I treat Hokkaido as a day trip from Tokyo?

Choose a separate northern stay and allow for the airport or long-distance rail journey. The island’s city, ski and rural stops also have their own transfer needs. [5]
