ICELAND · A TRIP WORTH TAKING

Iceland lakes and lagoons: choose the right stop

Iceland’s crater lakes and glacier lagoons offer very different visits. Kerið fits the Golden Circle, while Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón belong to a southeast journey. Choose for the landscape and the route, rather than collecting every lake on one trip.

PLAN WITH A LITTLE FORESIGHT

Make the day work

  1. 01

Separate a viewpoint from an activity

A shore visit and a boat outing are different plans. A boat adds a meeting point, time slot and weather dependency; it should not be assumed to run whenever the shore can be visited.

  2. 02

    Keep the southeast unhurried

Jökulsárlón and Fjallsárlón can share a regional day, but the journey from Reykjavík is substantial. Choose an overnight near the southeast instead of adding a late return.

  3. 03

    Stay on land unless guided

Glacial lagoons contain cold water and unstable ice. Admire the scene from permitted paths and use a professional operator for an on-water activity.
