ICELAND · A TRIP WORTH TAKING

Iceland national parks: choose between three different journeys

Choose Þingvellir for southwest history and rift landscapes, Snæfellsjökull for a western peninsula journey, or Vatnajökull for a much larger park with distinct glacier and canyon areas. A park name is not one driving destination.

PLAN WITH A LITTLE FORESIGHT

Make the day work

  1. 01

    Treat Vatnajökull as several visits

Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón fit a southeast journey, while Dettifoss belongs to a northern leg. They should not be treated as stops near one national-park entrance.

  2. 02

    Keep protected-area names precise

Landmannalaugar and Látrabjarg are valuable protected landscapes, but they are not substitutes for the three national parks in this comparison.

  3. 03

    Use the park’s local information

Check visitor centres, trails, access and current restrictions with the park authority. Marked paths, parking arrangements and seasonal conditions differ between sectors.
