Monument Valley & the San Juan country guide

Choose a valley-side stay for Monument Valley itself, or Bluff for the archaeology and San Juan country. These bases serve different parts of a long southbound journey.

Make the trip fit you

Make the journey work

Book the Navajo-led visit first

Guided access and the scenic-drive loop are overlapping ways to see the valley. Book an authorized Navajo operator for the areas it covers, then decide whether a separate drive adds anything. Confirm tribal hours and last entry. [8]

Do not turn the approach into a checklist

Butler Wash, House on Fire, Moki Dugway and Goosenecks are separate outings around Bluff and Mexican Hat. Keep one priority on a Moab transfer day and respect archaeological sites.

  1. 01 · Monument Valley & the San Juan country

Butler Wash is near the Bluff approach, not inside the Monument Valley scenic loop. Use designated access and view archaeological remains without touching them.

  2. 02 · Monument Valley & the San Juan country

Goosenecks is a separate state-park stop near Mexican Hat. It works as one choice on the approach; it does not shorten the onward drive.

  3. 03 · Monument Valley & the San Juan country

House on Fire is a separate archaeological outing in the Cedar Mesa country. Check local access and permit rules, stay on the approach and leave the site untouched.

John Ford Point belongs to the Monument Valley visit. Check whether it is covered by your booked Navajo-led tour before adding a separate drive.

Moki Dugway is an unpaved switchback section of UT-261. Check vehicle restrictions, road conditions and rental terms; it is not a necessary route for every car.

Questions before you go

Is Bluff the same base as Monument Valley?

No. Bluff serves the San Juan and archaeological approach country. Goulding’s and The View are valley-side alternatives, with a different connection to a booked Monument Valley visit.

Are access and bookings guaranteed?

Check the current land-manager notice, any required reservation, and the operator or property for your dates before committing to the next part of the journey.
