More about this place
Montenvers Railway & Mer de Glace is an excursion that pairs Chamonix’s red rack railway with a glacier viewpoint, the Glaciorium, and—when open—the gondola and stair access to the carved ice cave. The 20-minute train climbs from the town station to 1,913 meters, where the retreating glacier becomes both spectacle and climate record.
Budget three to four hours and treat the cave as a conditional component. It requires roughly 170 steps and closes for maintenance or operating conditions; the train, viewpoint, museum space, and mountain setting still make the excursion worthwhile when the cave is unavailable.

Original curator notes · check current details.
Confirm the final train, gondola, and cave status before departure. Dogs are permitted on leash, but the cave stairs can be difficult for them.

Plan this stop
Check train, gondola and ice-cave operations separately. A train ticket or open railway does not establish that every part of the glacier visit is available.
