More about this place
Punkaharju Tree Species Trail is a gentle forest outing through a research landscape where familiar trees appear alongside surprising varieties and forms. It gives Saimaa's lake holiday a quieter land-based chapter, with interpretation that rewards looking closely rather than chasing a summit.
Start at the Research Park's Kokonharju parking area and follow the signed Puulajireitti circuit, returning to the same access point. Allow around two to three hours for the roughly five-kilometre walk and pauses. A short optional detour towards the Karjalankallio lakeside shelter adds a place to rest.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry water and a snack. Parts follow gravel roads where vehicles may be present, and trails are not generally maintained for winter walking. Follow nature-reserve rules and the current official route map; do not substitute a nearby esker trail simply because it shares the Punkaharju name.
