HELSINKI · FINLAND · VISIT GUIDE

Suomenlinna Fortress Walk

Take the HSL passenger ferry from Market Square for a year-round island visit. The crossing is about 15 minutes; give the fortress half a day once you include both ferries, the island walk and a warm or meal break. A seasonal water bus is a different service with different tickets.

BEFORE YOU GO

Plan your Suomenlinna Fortress Walk visit

Fortress grounds free

Ferry or water-bus ticket separate; museums, guided visits and food cost extra. Check the current HSL fare for the zones you need before boarding.

Find the passenger ferry, not just a harbour pin

The regular HSL passenger ferry departs from the eastern side of Market Square, near the Presidential Palace. It arrives at the main pier on the northern shore of Iso Mustasaari. Walk or use current public transport to reach Market Square; Suomenlinna’s official guidance puts it about one kilometre, roughly a 20-minute walk, from Helsinki Central Railway Station. Add boarding time instead of treating the 15-minute crossing as the entire transfer. [1]

Buy the ticket before boarding

The fortress has no general entrance fee, but the boat journey needs its own valid ticket. The HSL passenger and service ferries are part of Helsinki public transport. Suomenlinna is in zone A; choose the valid zone combination for your whole journey in HSL’s current ticket guidance. Purchase before boarding because tickets are not sold on the ferry. Check when your ticket validity begins and whether it will still cover the return rather than assuming a single outbound ticket lasts all afternoon. [1]

Use the year-round ferry or a seasonal water bus

The HSL passenger ferry runs every day of the year and the trip is about 15 minutes. The seasonal water bus takes a different route and uses the operator’s own tickets: HSL tickets are not valid on it. Its Suomenlinna piers include Tykistölahden and Kuninkaanportti rather than the regular passenger-ferry main pier. Choose by the current timetable and the island area you want to visit, not by a generic ferry-search result. [1]

Check the return and the individual attractions

Island access, museum opening hours and a guided visit are separate planning decisions. Check the date-specific ferry timetable, especially for the last convenient return, and verify the particular museum or tour you want. In cold, wet or icy conditions, shorten the exposed walk and keep time for a warm break. Historic island access does not establish step-free access to every path or building; check the official visitor guidance for the route and facilities you need. [1]

MAKE IT YOUR TRIP

Choose your experience

A first visit without a tight timetable

Start at the passenger-ferry main pier, choose an island walk to match the weather and leave space for lunch or an indoor stop. A half-day allowance is an editorial planning choice, not a fixed guided-tour duration. If you book a guide, use its meeting point and start time to set the order; the ferry fare and museum tickets may still be separate purchases. [1]

When the weather changes

Keep a city alternative rather than forcing a long waterfront walk into a short arrival day. Oodi and an exhibition at Amos Rex can make a useful indoor-led day, subject to their actual hours and tickets. Move the island outing to the day with the better forecast when your booked arrangements permit it. The year-round ferry does not mean every summer island service runs all year. [1]

Pair the island with the right city base

Hotel F6 is the suggested base for both nights in the three-day Helsinki starting route. Central Helsinki makes Market Square a straightforward outing; Katajanokka is another neighbourhood to compare. A sauna afterwards can work, but do not book the paid slot immediately after the planned ferry arrival. Leave a return and transport buffer, or put the sauna on the city day. [1]

Where does the Suomenlinna ferry leave from?

The year-round HSL passenger ferry leaves from the eastern side of Market Square, near the Presidential Palace, and reaches the main pier on Iso Mustasaari. Check the signs and the current timetable; seasonal water-bus and weekday service-ferry departures are different. [1]

Is Suomenlinna free to visit?

There is no general entrance fee for the fortress grounds. The ferry or water bus needs a ticket, and individual museums, guided activities and food can cost extra. [1]

Can I use an HSL ticket on the water bus?

No. The seasonal water bus uses its own operator tickets. A valid HSL ticket works on the HSL passenger and service ferries, subject to the zones and validity you need. [1]

Does the ferry run in winter?

The HSL passenger ferry runs every day of the year. Check the timetable for the actual date and plan the walking and indoor stops around conditions; seasonal water-bus service and individual attraction openings differ. [1]

Sources & planning notes

Checked November 5, 2026

Ferry, terminal and ticket distinctions were checked against Suomenlinna’s official arrival guidance on November 5, 2026. The half-day allowance is editorial planning advice. Confirm current fares, schedules, museum openings and conditions for your date.

The HSL passenger ferry and the seasonal water bus are separate services with different ticket rules and island piers.

The historic fortress has uneven outdoor terrain. Ask about the paths and individual facilities you need rather than assuming every island building is accessible.
