More about this place
Crossness Pumping Station is a Victorian sewage works with an extravagant interior of ornamental ironwork. Painted columns, decorative arches and enormous beam engines give this piece of engineering an unlikely grandeur, while the story explains how sanitation reshaped the city.
Allow three hours including the approach and time in the Beam Engine House and exhibitions. Choose a Steaming Day if seeing Prince Consort in motion is your priority. Smaller guided-tour visits offer a film, a model talk and a walk through the site, but the engine does not run under steam on those days.
You must choose a published opening or tour date; Crossness is not open daily. The free vintage bus from Abbey Wood runs on Steaming Days and special events, not ordinary guided-tour days. Use the official arrival instructions, and expect uneven surfaces and stairs to some parts of the historic machinery.
