4 days in England

London Essentials

Come for the landmarks, then leave room for the London that lives between them. I’d pair the royal stories with a guided food discovery and a few neighbourhood surprises, choosing a different pace for a first visit, a return trip or a city adventure with the kids.

London · A city base, with room to explore

A first London visit, without the daily dash

Westminster, the National Gallery and the Tower. Three days with sights saved, then a flexible departure day. The final day has no saved attractions. The Hoxton, Holborn is the suggested base for every overnight; it is not a confirmed reservation. Keep arrival flexible and move days to suit actual opening times.

Book the interior that matters

Treat Big Ben and Buckingham Palace as exterior stops unless you separately book an interior. Abbey sightseeing differs from Sunday worship. The Tower, a guided market walk and Tower Bridge need enough time between their bookings.

Check Abbey sightseeing access ↗

Keep the Tower day manageable

The bridge is beside the Tower; Borough Market is farther west across the river. Reorder Tower → bridge → market to reduce backtracking, or drop the bridge interior. Borough Market normally closes on Monday.

Transport, ages & access

Use public transport between clusters and walk within them. Plan the airport connection separately; the station-to-hotel walk and stairs matter with luggage or a buggy. Check TfL’s step-free guide and live lift status for your actual journey. Calendar temperatures are catalog seasonal estimates, not a forecast for your dates.

The palace State Rooms have a seasonal calendar. The published 2027 summer dates are July 8–September 26; an exterior walk is possible without a State Rooms ticket. Do not assume a Changing the Guard ceremony runs every day.

Your 4-day route at a glance

Explore England

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Ease into WestminsterLondon

Plan the day: See the Elizabeth Tower and palace exterior on a flexible arrival walk. Do not make an interior tour depend on a flight arriving on time.

If plans change: If arrival is late, keep the riverside view and move the palace walk. State Rooms require a separate seasonal booking.

Things to do

  1. Big Ben30m
  2. Buckingham Palace30m

Suggested stay

Day 2Westminster to Trafalgar SquareLondon

Plan the day: Book the Abbey first, then walk up Whitehall to the National Gallery. Choose a small part of the collection and leave time for lunch.

If plans change: The Abbey is open for worship rather than sightseeing on Sundays. Move this day to a sightseeing date; use the Gallery as your indoor anchor.

Things to do

  1. Westminster Abbey1-3h
  2. National Gallery1-4h

Suggested stay

Day 3The Tower, bridge and marketLondon

Plan the day: Give the Tower of London the morning. Tower Bridge is beside it; Borough Market is farther west on the south bank. Put the bridge before the market to avoid backtracking, or choose one after the Tower.

If plans change: Borough Market normally closes on Monday. A guided food walk needs its own booking; a market browse is a different activity. Drop the bridge interior if the day feels rushed.

Things to do

  1. Tower of London2-5h
  2. Borough Market Food Walk3h
  3. Tower Bridge Exhibition1-2hOptional add-on

Suggested stay

Day 4A flexible departureLondon

Plan the day: No attraction is saved on this day. Keep time for luggage, the station transfer and your airline’s check-in requirements.

If plans change: If you have a late departure, choose one short walk near your base. Do not add a remote excursion to use up spare hours.

Things to do

Keep this day flexible for travel and exploring.
