Great Sand Dunes & the San Luis Valley

Keep dune walking and sand sledding together, with time for heat, wind and soft sand. Zapata Falls is a separate outing south of the park; Medano Pass is a specialist 4WD road.

Make the trip fit you

Make the choices fit the journey

Choose one main focus

Choose a short dune walk or a longer High Dune outing according to conditions. Pick up any sled before entering: NPS lists no rentals inside the park. Treat Zapata Falls as an extra stop and Medano Pass as a different vehicle decision. [9][10]

Choose an overnight that matches

Great Sand Dunes Lodge is near the park approach. Rustic Rook is farther west near Mosca; Fairfield is in Alamosa. The source camping pin represents a permitted backcountry experience, not a hotel room or fixed campsite.

Leave room for the mountain weather

High-elevation roads and walks can have snow, strong wind and thunderstorms. Choose an outing within your experience, check the forecast and current official advice, and keep a lower-elevation alternative. [2][3]

  1. 01 · Great Sand Dunes National Park

Choose the main dunes area for a first visit. Sand heat, wind and thunderstorms can change the plan; Medano Creek flow is not guaranteed by a month label.

  2. 02 · Main dunefield · Great Sand Dunes

High Dune is an effortful walk on soft sand. There is no fixed maintained loop across the dunes; choose a return route and turn-around time that fit the conditions.

  3. 03 · Great Sand Dunes Preserve · Medano Pass road

This primitive road requires suitable high-clearance 4WD; AWD is not equivalent. Deep sand, creek crossings and closures make it a separate specialist outing, not a regular rental-car shortcut.

  4. 04 · Main dunefield · Great Sand Dunes

Pick up a sand sled outside the park before arriving; NPS lists no rentals inside. Keep shoes with you and avoid hot sand and thunderstorms.

  5. 05 · Main dunefield · Great Sand Dunes

A short dune walk can be enough. Set the distance by sand temperature, wind and your return time rather than treating every ridge as a required summit.

  6. 06 · Zapata Falls · south of the park

The waterfall is a separate approach south of the park. Check road and trail conditions, particularly ice or water in the narrow approach; avoid assuming a dry paved walk.
