More about this place
Sunwapta Falls Viewpoint is a short encounter with a river dropping into a narrow limestone gorge near the Icefields Parkway. The footbridge and maintained viewpoints let you experience the force of the upper falls without committing to the longer lower-falls or backcountry routes.
Use the signed falls day-use area, walk to the upper viewing points and return to the same arrival area. Allow about an hour for the complete stop. The route's convenience makes it easy to underestimate how much time a string of Parkway stops can add to a driving day.
Stay behind the railings: spray leaves nearby rocks dangerously slippery. Wear shoes with grip and check current day-use access before travelling. The upper viewpoint is the scope of this visit; an onward hike needs its own time, route preparation and current trail information.
