More about this place
Tunnel Mountain Summit is a short mountain hike with an unusually generous reward: Banff, the Bow Valley and Mount Rundle spread out beneath a summit close to town. The steady climb makes it a real walk rather than a roadside viewpoint, without requiring an alpine expedition.
Follow the signed summit trail from the designated Tunnel Mountain trailhead, climb the switchbacks and return by the same route. Allow about three hours including pauses; the official route is roughly 2.3 kilometres each way, so reaching the top is only half the walking.
Check the current trail report and choose footwear with traction. Carry water, a warm layer and the park's recommended wildlife precautions. Snow or ice changes the difficulty substantially; a short distance does not make a winter ascent automatically suitable for every family or mobility level.
