From West Yellowstone to the geyser basins guide

West Yellowstone is a gateway town. Old Faithful, Grand Prismatic and West Thumb are inside the park, with separate approaches and enough to fill several different outings.

Make the trip fit you

Make the day fit the journey

Choose the basin before the drive

From the West Entrance, the road reaches Madison before the geyser corridor. Pick Midway’s boardwalk or the Grand Prismatic overlook as a main outing, rather than assuming one parking stop covers both. [6]

Stay with the current access

Firehole Lake Drive is closed to vehicles; Biscuit Basin is listed as closed. Choose an open signed basin route, with time for parking and the next overnight. [6][3]

Town stay or basin stay

West Yellowstone town stays require a daily entrance approach. Old Faithful Inn and Grant Village are inside Yellowstone, despite sharing the West Yellowstone source group. [1][4]
