Yellowstone entrances & driving

Choose your entrance, overnight bases and season together. The park’s roads connect distant areas; a short visit allowance does not include the drive, parking or wildlife delays.

Make the trip fit you

Make the day fit the journey

Follow a direction

Use Mammoth and Gardiner for northern visits, Canyon and Lake Village for the central and lake corridor, and Old Faithful for the geyser area. Repeatedly returning to one distant base can consume the day. [1]

A two-park transfer needs room

Yellowstone’s South Entrance road is seasonal. Plan the journey to Grand Teton and Jackson as a transfer, choosing short stops instead of adding a full Lone Star or Lake Solitude hike. [1][10]

Winter changes the network

Most roads close to regular vehicles from early November until spring. The northern corridor is different from snowcoach and snowmobile access. The NPS page lists projected 2027 openings; every date remains weather-dependent. [1]

Reservations are separate questions

Park entry, a campground, a lodge room, a tour and a Jenny Lake boat are different arrangements. Check each official service for your dates instead of treating one reservation as covering the trip. [11][4][9]

What should I check close to the trip?

Recheck NPS roads, current closures and facility operating dates. Map pins show locations, not driving times or a guaranteed route. [1][3][4]
