Yellowstone in September

September rewards a flexible road plan with checked lodging and dining dates. Do not assume summer services, mild weather or every high route will remain available.

Make the trip fit you

Make the day fit the journey

Check the room and the meal

Lodging, dining, visitor centers and campgrounds close on different dates. Confirm the exact property and nearby services before choosing a long overnight transfer. [4]

Keep the high route conditional

Snow and freezing temperatures can change roads or walks. Check the current road status before linking Canyon with Tower over Dunraven Pass or making the two-park connection. [1][8]

Give wildlife space

Watch from designated pullouts, without approaching or blocking animals. Keep at least 100 yards from bears, wolves and cougars and 25 yards from other wildlife; move farther away if needed. [2]

Keep Mount Washburn out of an autumn plan

NPS advises against this hike in September and October because grizzly bears frequent the area. Choose another open outing and check local restrictions. [14]

Questions before you go

Check the room and the meal?

Lodging, dining, visitor centers and campgrounds close on different dates. Confirm the exact property and nearby services before choosing a long overnight transfer. [4]

What should I check close to the trip?

Recheck NPS roads, current closures and facility operating dates. Map pins show locations, not driving times or a guaranteed route. [1][3][4]
