Yellowstone in May

May suits a flexible trip built around staged road and service openings. Choose dates and bases after checking which roads, lodges and walks will actually be usable.

Make the trip fit you

Make the day fit the journey

Early and late May differ

The current NPS calendar projects the East Entrance for May 7, South Entrance for May 14 and Dunraven Pass for May 28 in 2027. These are provisional dates, not guaranteed openings or a repeating annual schedule. [1]

Choose a workable partial route

Before the South Entrance opens, do not book a through-drive from Yellowstone to Grand Teton. If a high road or trail is closed, focus on the open lower-level areas rather than forcing the whole saved loop. [1]

Sleep where services operate

Match the particular lodge or gateway property to your exact dates. Road opening does not mean its restaurant, visitor center and rooms all open together. [4]
