Getting around Tuscany: car, rail & ZTL

Keep Florence car-free where practical, use a car for rural hill-town days, and switch to rail for Cinque Terre in Liguria. Plan parking and the last connection before setting off.

Make the trip fit you

Make the route work for you

Florence first, rental car later

The city’s ZTL covers much of the historic centre. Pedestrian streets and bus lanes remain restricted. Contact the hotel or garage for the permitted approach and number-plate procedure rather than following a generic navigation shortcut. [1]

Choose the countryside driving days

Rural stays near Pienza, Montalcino, Greve and Camaiore are distinct bases. Plan the local road arrival, permitted parking at hill towns and a non-driving return after wine tastings.

Use rail along the Ligurian coast

The Cinque Terre card types have different rail and trail inclusions. Check the train service for the actual date, the luggage approach to your stay, and current trail closures before choosing a walk. [2][3]

Do not compress the transfer days

The saved adventure crosses from the coast to San Gimignano and later groups Orvieto, Pitigliano and Saturnia into one day. Choose alternatives and use the selected overnight to judge the day’s full journey.

Questions before you go

Do I need a car in Florence?

Central Florence is suited to walking, with public transport or taxis for wider journeys. A rental car adds ZTL and parking arrangements; consider collecting it when the countryside portion starts. [1]

Can I drive between Cinque Terre village centres?

Plan to use rail for village-to-village travel. Check the park’s transport information and ask your stay for arrival and parking instructions before bringing a car. [2]

Does a hotel booking let me enter Florence’s ZTL?

Ask the hotel or garage for the precise permitted approach and registration procedure. A booking does not authorize every restricted street, pedestrian area or bus lane. [1]
