Deadvlei access: Sesriem, the sand and your morning

Work backwards from the walk at Deadvlei: first the lodge-to-gate journey, then entry and the park road, then transport on the final sandy section. Confirm current rules before choosing the morning.

Make the journey fit

A nearby lodge is not an inside-gate stay

The curated Desert Quiver and Desert Camp entries are outside the park. NWR’s Sesriem campsite is inside the park setting; verify the actual gate and any early entry privileges with the accommodation. [4]

Check the 2026 access clarification

The concession archive retains an April notice restricting self-driving from May. A June report describes MEFT’s May clarification restoring 4x4 self-drive access. Because these published accounts differ, arrange the shuttle or confirm the permitted vehicle option at Sesriem before setting out. [5][6]

Allow exposed walking time

The drive and sand-section transport do not deliver you onto the pan. Keep water, sun protection and enough time for the walk back. Decide whether a second dune climb still makes sense. [2]

Do not combine two dawn appointments

A balloon programme and Deadvlei both use the early morning. Book them on separate mornings if both matter, and keep wind cancellation or transport delays from forcing a late onward drive.

Questions before you go

Is self-driving past the 2x4 parking guaranteed?

No guarantee is made here. Published 2026 notices and later clarification differ; confirm current park restrictions and arrange a suitable shuttle or permitted vehicle option for your visit. [5][6]

Can I promise sunrise at Deadvlei from outside Sesriem?

No. Park gates, the road, final transport and the walk come first. Confirm the current entry arrangements with your lodge and the park. [4]
