When to visit Namibia: dry season, heat and rain

Choose a season for your route, rather than relying on one countrywide weather label. Inland winter nights can be cold, the Atlantic coast is cooler, and summer rain can change road and canyon plans.

Make the journey fit

May to September: cooler inland days

Namibia Tourism Board describes pleasant winter days and potentially freezing nights. Pack warm layers for dawn wildlife outings and desert evenings; a source daylight number is not a local sunrise table. [2]

October and November: heat and changing conditions

The inland summer becomes hotter. The Tourism Board identifies an earlier rain period around September–November, so do not promise a completely dry October or November. Schedule exposed walking conservatively. [2]

December to April: plan around rain

The main rainy period falls in summer. Keep road and river conditions flexible and check the specific gravel approaches before travelling. Allow for summer heat and rain in January. [2][1]

Canyon and coast have separate rules

The multi-day Fish River trail normally uses a May 1–September 15 window, subject to current safety checks. Coastal fog, wind and cool air can affect boat and flight plans at any time. [7][8][2]

Questions before you go

Is January a dry-summer month?

January falls within the main rainy period. Namibia Tourism Board places the main rains between December and April, with substantial variation by location. [2]

Does the Fish River hiking season guarantee access?

No. NWR postponed access after high water in 2026 before announcing a July reopening. Confirm the actual season and trail status for your trip. [8]
