Namibia scenic drives: make the road part of the plan

Compare Damaraland landscapes, the central-coast detours and the desert crossing towards Sesriem. Reference pins mark places, not turn-by-turn driving routes.

Make the trip fit you

Make the journey fit

Damaraland by your actual bases

Choose the road between the lodge and main heritage or landscape stop first. The saved one-hour scenic-drive allowance does not describe a full Damaraland transfer.

Coast and Moon Landscape

North-coast Zeila and Cape Cross differ from the inland Moon Landscape. Confirm current access and permit requirements before adding a detour to a long transfer. [1]

Solitaire and the dune road

Solitaire can be a practical fuel and food stop on the coast–Sesriem leg. The park road to Dune 45 is a separate gated drive, with final sandy access to Deadvlei requiring current checks. [4][5][6]

Keep arrival in daylight

Choose the next overnight before filling a day with stops. Gravel conditions, fuel, breaks and the final lodge approach can change the day; do not rely on the saved activity allowances as driving estimates. Avoid night driving. [1]

6 places
  1. 01 · Damaraland

Use this as a landscape-led transfer between your actual bases. The saved one-hour allowance describes a scenic segment, not the whole crossing of Damaraland.

  2. 02 · Swakop River / Moon Landscape, inland from Swakopmund

Consider the Moon Landscape as a separate desert-road excursion or a checked detour on your transfer, not a quick stop in central Walvis Bay.

  3. 03 · South of Henties Bay, north of Swakopmund

Use the Zeila as a brief coastal-road stop if your route already passes it. It is far north of Walvis Bay’s lagoon.

  4. 04 · Solitaire, C14/C19 junction

Use Solitaire as a practical break on the coast–Sesriem crossing. Refuelling, food and a rest matter more than adding another compulsory attraction.

  5. 05 · Tropic of Capricorn crossing, C14

A brief roadside landmark on the desert transfer, useful if it falls naturally on your chosen road.

  6. 06 · Dune 45, Sossusvlei road

Dune 45 is a separate climb on the park road. Choose it for dune views; you do not have to climb it as well as every other dune on a Deadvlei day.

Questions before you go

Are the map lines driving directions?

The guide map shows locations. Use a checked road route, rental-company advice and the property’s current directions for the actual drive. [1]

How much can I add to a transfer day?

Choose one main detour after allowing for surface, fuel, breaks, gate hours and a daylight arrival. Cut optional stops if those margins disappear. [1]
