Fish River Canyon: rim visit or multi-day trek?

A canyon-rim visit and the multi-day Fish River Trail are different trips. Choose the side, season and level of commitment before arranging the southern route.

Make the trip fit you

Make the journey fit

For a short visit, stay on the rim

Use authorised viewpoints on the appropriate canyon side. A short rim allowance does not include descending into the canyon, and the eastern and western approaches are separate road journeys. [3]

Reserve the trek as its own trip

NWR describes a usual May 1–September 15 hiking window. Confirm the trail reservation, current medical and group requirements, self-sufficient equipment, water and the exit transfer directly before committing. [7]

Check conditions beyond the season

High water delayed the 2026 trail before NWR announced a July reopening. An old opening announcement or a seasonal label is not proof that the trail is open on your dates. [8]

Do not squeeze it behind a boat morning

The saved long route puts Halifax Island and the canyon rim into one day. Choose the boat or the early road departure, add a night, or defer the viewpoint to keep the lodge arrival in daylight. [1]

Questions before you go

Is the Fish River trek part of the 15-day route?

No. The default road trip contains the overlook walk; the multi-day trail is a separate curated alternative.

Can I go into the canyon in summer?

Do not use the rim guide as permission to descend. Confirm the current trail rules and permitted season directly with NWR. [7]
