I’d keep Highgate Cemetery in mind for a stop in London.
More about this place
Highgate Cemetery is a wooded landscape of elaborate Victorian monuments, crooked paths and names that connect London to a much larger world. The older West side climbs the hillside among tombs and architectural surprises; across Swain’s Lane, the East side includes the graves of Karl Marx and George Eliot.
Allow one to three hours to explore both sides at a respectful pace. One admission ticket covers them together, and you can visit independently. The cemetery’s own guided tours add stories and context, lasting around seventy-five minutes with time afterwards to wander further.
This remains a working burial ground, so keep to the paths and behave quietly. Some West-side routes are steep and can be muddy; the East side is gentler. Winter closing is earlier, funerals or poor weather can restrict access, and dogs other than appropriately trained assistance dogs are not admitted.
