  1. The general store is open in summer and sells cold drinks and souvenirs — a genuine treat at 10,500 feet.

  2. A standard car can reach St. Elmo on the paved road, but 4WD is needed to continue to Hancock Pass and the high-mountain routes beyond.

Choose your experience

Choose an overnight that fits

Aspen puts you near town and the Maroon Bells approach. Snowmass Village suits a resort base outside Aspen. Glenwood Springs suits Hanging Lake and the I-70 corridor; it adds a separate drive to Aspen.

Keep a practical alternative

Shorten the outing or choose another local stop when access, weather or the onward drive changes. Do not turn a reserved start time into a reason to rush a mountain road. [8][7][5]
