The cliffside is steep but well-maintained and offers unique views every step of the way. It usually takes an hour to go down and back up. Once at the beach, you can enjoy crystal clear waters, white sand beaches, and the towering T-Rex around you.

While the beach was considered an off-the-beaten-path experience in Bali not far ago, it now gets crowded closer to mid-day, so we recommend visiting first thing in the morning after you arrive on the island.

First you descend a series of steep steps, passing through lush rice paddies and a small river. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the stunning sight of the towering rock-cut shrines, each measuring around 7 meters in height. It is also a site of cultural and spiritual significance, with local Balinese Hindus making regular offerings and prayers at the temple.

The temple is not as popular as other sights in Bali, so if you visit in late afternoon – there's a good chance to have the place to yourself to admire the intricate carvings and stunning views of the surrounding rice paddies and the river.

The temple is dedicated to Vishnu, one of the major Hindu gods, and is famous for its holy spring water, which is believed to have healing properties. The temple's central courtyard contains a large pool fed by 12 fountains, each with its own spout. Visitors are invited to enter the pool and bathe under the fountains as a form of purification.

According to local legend, the holy spring water at Pura Tirta Empul was created by the god Indra, who struck the ground with his thunderbolt. The temple has been in use since the 10th century, and the current structures date back to the 19th century. The temple is a popular destination for both tourists and locals, and it is often crowded with people who come to purify themselves and seek blessings.

Be advised that you are required to wear a sarong and sash as a sign of respect. Sarongs and sashes are available for rent at the entrance to the temple. The hike offers stunning views of the sunrise from the top of Mount Batur and should be on the bucket list of every traveler to Bali. The hike is considered moderate, takes approximately two hours each way, and takes place in the early morning hours. You can do it any time of the day, but the sunrise from the volcanic crater over the lake is just magical, so we don't recommend any other way.

The trek starts at the base of the mountain and winds through the jungle before reaching the steeper parts of the ascent. Along the way, you can spot unique flora and fauna, including monkeys, birds, and tropical plants. Once you reach the summit, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the sunrise over the surrounding mountains and Lake Batur.

You can do this hike yourself, arriving and parking the car at the mount base. But we recommend getting a local guide for a hassle-free experience. You are usually picked up at 2:00-ish am from your hotel in Ubud and start the ascend an hour later. The guides are also knowledgeable about the area and can provide information about the flora, fauna, and local culture.

The "Eat Pray Love" villa is a private residence located in Ubud, which gained notoriety after being featured in Elizabeth Gilbert's best-selling memoir "Eat Pray Love" and the subsequent movie adaptation starring Julia Roberts. The villa, named Nyuh Kuning, is a traditional Balinese home featuring beautiful wood carvings and a stunning garden complete with a lotus pond and an outdoor pavilion.

The villa is not open to the public but you can book a few nights here to feel connected to a bigger story. The street where the villa is located, Jalan Kajeng, is a popular spot for tourists to take photos in front of the villa's gate, which is adorned with a traditional Balinese carving.
