Sunrise on Mount Batur

The hike offers stunning views of the sunrise from the top of Mount Batur and should be on the bucket list of every traveler to Bali. The hike is considered moderate, takes approximately two hours each way, and takes place in the early morning hours. You can do it any time of the day, but the sunrise from the volcanic crater over the lake is just magical, so we don't recommend any other way.

The trek starts at the base of the mountain and winds through the jungle before reaching the steeper parts of the ascent. Along the way, you can spot unique flora and fauna, including monkeys, birds, and tropical plants. Once you reach the summit, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the sunrise over the surrounding mountains and Lake Batur.

You can do this hike yourself, arriving and parking the car at the mount base. But we recommend getting a local guide for a hassle-free experience. You are usually picked up at 2:00-ish am from your hotel in Ubud and start the ascend an hour later. The guides are also knowledgeable about the area and can provide information about the flora, fauna, and local culture.

If you decide to go with the guide – check our curated local recommendations in the links above. We personally like a slightly more expensive, but mind-blowing experience on old 4x4 Jeeps through these stunning landscapes. They also include soaking in hot springs afterward. Totally recommend!

The Mount Batur sunrise hike is a memorable experience and is highly recommended for those looking for adventure and stunning views in Bali.
