Candi Tebing Gunung Kawi, also known as the Mountain Kawi Cliff Temple, is an ancient temple complex located just outside of Ubud. It is believed to have been built in the 11th century during the reign of King Anak Wungsu, and consists of ten rock-cut candi or shrines carved into the cliff face. First you descend a series of steep steps, passing through lush rice paddies and a small river. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the stunning sight of the towering rock-cut shrines, each measuring around 7 meters in height. It is also a site of cultural and spiritual significance, with local Balinese Hindus making regular offerings and prayers at the temple. The temple is not as popular as other sights in Bali, so if you visit in late afternoon โ€“ there's a good chance to have the place to yourself to admire the intricate carvings and stunning views of the surrounding rice paddies and the river.
