You can enjoy epic views right from the viewing point near the parking lot, but we recommend hiking down to the beach itself. The cliffside is steep but well-maintained and offers unique views every step of the way. It usually takes an hour to go down and back up. Once at the beach, you can enjoy crystal clear waters, white sand beaches, and the towering T-Rex around you.

While the beach was considered an off-the-beaten-path experience in Bali not far ago, it now gets crowded closer to mid-day, so we recommend visiting first thing in the morning after you arrive on the island.

First you descend a series of steep steps, passing through lush rice paddies and a small river. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by the stunning sight of the towering rock-cut shrines, each measuring around 7 meters in height. It is also a site of cultural and spiritual significance, with local Balinese Hindus making regular offerings and prayers at the temple.

The temple is not as popular as other sights in Bali, so if you visit in late afternoon – there's a good chance to have the place to yourself to admire the intricate carvings and stunning views of the surrounding rice paddies and the river.

The temple is dedicated to Vishnu, one of the major Hindu gods, and is famous for its holy spring water, which is believed to have healing properties. The temple's central courtyard contains a large pool fed by 12 fountains, each with its own spout. Visitors are invited to enter the pool and bathe under the fountains as a form of purification.

According to local legend, the holy spring water at Pura Tirta Empul was created by the god Indra, who struck the ground with his thunderbolt. The temple has been in use since the 10th century, and the current structures date back to the 19th century. The temple is a popular destination for both tourists and locals, and it is often crowded with people who come to purify themselves and seek blessings.

Be advised that you are required to wear a sarong and sash as a sign of respect. Sarongs and sashes are available for rent at the entrance to the temple. The hike offers stunning views of the sunrise from the top of Mount Batur and should be on the bucket list of every traveler to Bali. The hike is considered moderate, takes approximately two hours each way, and takes place in the early morning hours. You can do it any time of the day, but the sunrise from the volcanic crater over the lake is just magical, so we don't recommend any other way.

The trek starts at the base of the mountain and winds through the jungle before reaching the steeper parts of the ascent. Along the way, you can spot unique flora and fauna, including monkeys, birds, and tropical plants. Once you reach the summit, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of the sunrise over the surrounding mountains and Lake Batur.

You can do this hike yourself, arriving and parking the car at the mount base. But we recommend getting a local guide for a hassle-free experience. You are usually picked up at 2:00-ish am from your hotel in Ubud and start the ascend an hour later. The guides are also knowledgeable about the area and can provide information about the flora, fauna, and local culture.

Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is a remote exotic island accessible by a ferry or a private boat with your guided tour. There is no wrong option though: if you like stress-free logistics – we recommend a guided tour, and if you like to explore at your own pace – here is what you need to know:

Take a taxi to Sanur Harbor. If you arrive on your scooter or car – there is a parking lot where you can drop it off. Once at the harbor, there are a few vendors, but we recommend buying tickets for Mola-Mola Express which is one of the fastest and safest options and will take you to the island in about 30 minutes. It costs around $10 one way.

Keep in mind that Nusa Penida became quite popular in recent years, so we recommend taking one of the earliest ferries at 8:30 am, and to ensure you have a ticket for that day – it's better to be at the ticket office at 7:30-ish.

Also keep in mind that Nusa Penida is a big island and almost impossible to explore on foot, so you'll need to rent a scooter or a driver to explore the island.

And last but not least – the last ferries back depart at 4:30 pm, so make sure you make it back in time. If you decide on staying overnight at the island – reach out to your hotel and they will help with the logistics around the island.
