Before choosing the nights
Give the long journeys their own space
The seven-day starting plan connects Matanuska, Denali, Girdwood, Seward and Homer. Several days combine a major outing and a long drive; simplify the route before booking. Read the notes below and choose which experiences matter most.
Keep the mountain day local
A full Denali hike and the drive to Girdwood leave little margin. Choose the main walk, add a northern night or make the transfer the day’s priority.
Compare hikes & walks →Girdwood is before Whittier
Alyeska’s resort, tram and spa are in Girdwood. The Whittier cruise needs a scheduled tunnel crossing; it is a separate connection before the onward Seward drive.
Plan Girdwood & Whittier →Book the departure that shapes the day
Confirm park buses, cruise check-in, flight weather terms and exact overnight addresses. The saved route does not reserve transport or establish current access.

Your 7-day route at a glance
Explore AlaskaStart with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.
Day 1Anchorage
Plan the day: Treat Matanuska as the main outing, then reassess the long drive to the Denali overnight. A glacier tour and the entire northern transfer leave little room.
If plans change: Split the journey with an extra night or skip the glacier tour rather than rushing the drive.
Things to do
Suggested stay
Day 2Denali
Plan the day: Choose flightseeing or the jeep tour as the anchor; confirm the actual departure location. A Denali group label does not put both at the park entrance.
If plans change: Use a park-entrance walk if weather cancels the flight; arrange any park bus separately.
Things to do
- Denali Flightseeing2h
- Denali Jeep Tour4hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 3Denali
Plan the day: The plan combines Savage Alpine with a long southbound transfer and an Alyeska spa visit in Girdwood. Do not treat all three as commitments.
If plans change: Keep the hike and another northern night, or shorten the walk and make the transfer the day’s priority.
Things to do
- Savage Alpine Trail2-3h
- Alyeska Nordic Spa2-3hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 4Whittier
Plan the day: Alyeska tram is in Girdwood; the cruise departs Whittier beyond the tunnel. Check both schedules before continuing to Seward.
If plans change: Choose the cruise as the anchor and leave the tram optional. Reserve time for the tunnel and onward road journey.
Things to do
- Alyeska Aerial Tram1-2hOptional add-on
- 26 Glacier Cruise6h
- Seward Highway1h
Suggested stay
Day 5Seward
Plan the day: Choose a designated Exit Glacier walk, then allow for the substantial Seward-to-Homer move. Check the oyster venue’s actual address and hours.
If plans change: Keep the food stop optional and use a shorter glacier visit if conditions or the transfer need it.
Things to do
- Exit Glacier1-2h
- Kachemak Oyster Bar1hOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 6Homer
Plan the day: Keep the bear-viewing flight flexible before the return to Anchorage. The bore tide is a separate timed opportunity on Turnagain Arm.
If plans change: If the flight shifts or the drive runs late, drop the tide stop. Do not make a same-day flight home depend on the excursion.
Things to do
- Bear Viewing Adventure4-7h
- Bore Tide Viewing15mOptional add-on
Suggested stay
Day 7Anchorage
Plan the day: Use Anchorage for the museum and departure arrangements. Add the airport journey and the airline’s check-in margin.
If plans change: Choose a shorter city visit if the flight leaves early.
