Peru has the most microclimates on the globe, so there's no one good season for everything. The mountain regions of Cusco and Machu Picchu are best experienced in the Dry season, with May and October being perfect due to warm days and fewer crowds. The coastal regions will be covered in gray mist, yet still crowded June to August.

The coastal regions of Lima and Ica are best during this time with sunny weather. It is also okay to visit mountain regions in November, March, and April – the nights are much warmer and the rain is usually just hour-long and falls in the afternoons. But avoid mountains from December to February since it often rains heavily.

The scenic train between Cusco and Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu) is a breathtaking experience that takes you through the picturesque landscapes of the Peruvian Andes. This unique transfer features stunning mountain views, lush valleys, and winding rivers.

Throughout the journey, you'll be immersed in the rich culture and history of the region, as the train traverses through traditional Inca villages and passes by ancient archaeological sites. The comfortable and well-equipped trains provide an enjoyable ride, allowing you to relax and soak in the awe-inspiring scenery.

The train route follows the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside. You'll witness the natural beauty of the Andean highlands, with snow-capped peaks, terraced fields, and traditional Andean villages dotting the landscape.

Logistics tip. We recommend exploring the Cusco region and embarking on this train from the Ollantaytambo station, not Cusco. And then riding all the way to Cusco on your way back. Or back to Ollantaytambo if you left your car there. It takes 1.5h to get to Machu Picchu station from Ollantaytambo, and 3.3h from Cusco.

Train fares. There are three types of trains: Expedition, Vistadome, and Observation Vistadome. We recommend going with the latter two options (Vistadomes) since they feature beautiful panoramic dome carts for enjoying the views. Both The Observation option features an extra observation lounge cart, while the Vistadome option features cultural performances on your way back to Cusco.
