That Wanaka Tree (a.k.a. the Lonely Tree), is a willow tree located at the southern end of Lake Wanaka. It is a popular photography spot due to its unique location, growing out of the water near the shore of the lake, with the stunning Southern Alps in the background.

The tree's origins are unclear, but it is believed to have been planted by early settlers to the area over 80 years ago. Despite its age, the tree only gained widespread attention in recent years after becoming a popular photography spot on social media.

It is now an iconic landmark of Wanaka and attracts visitors from all over the world. However, due to the large number of visitors and the tree's fragile root system, visitors are encouraged to respect the area and stay on designated paths to preserve the natural beauty of the location.
