Abel Tasman Coast Track

The Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve is the largest dark sky reserve in the world. It covers an area of 1,660 square miles and is home to some of the clearest and darkest skies in the world, making it an ideal location for stargazing and astrophotography.

The reserve is located near Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, which provides a stunning backdrop for nighttime sky viewing. With little light pollution in the area, the Milky Way and other galaxies are easily visible to the naked eye.

Aoraki Dark Skies Reserve

Enjoy stunning views of the glacial lakes from the Blue Lakes and Tasman Glacier lookouts, located a short hike from one another. Chances are you are quite jet-lagged from your long flight, and this spot is just perfect to relax and take in the views on your first day in New Zealand. Just walk to the top of the mountain and explore the crater and surrounding parkland. The hike to the summit takes around 20-30 minutes and is relatively easy. Along the way, you will enjoy views of the city skyline, the Waitemata Harbour, and Rangitoto Island.

The Kepler Track is an iconic 37-mile hiking trail known for its breathtaking views of the Fiordland National Park and the Southern Alps. It is considered one of New Zealand's Great Walks.

The trail starts and ends near the town of Te Anau and usually takes 3-4 days to complete, with several huts available for overnight stays along the way. Milford Sound is a natural wonder located in Fiordland National Park, our favorite fjord in the world. The best way to experience this magnificent sight is to take a scenic cruise through the sound and its surrounding mountains, waterfalls, and wildlife.

You will witness the famous Mitre Peak, towering 5,511 feet above the water, as well as other awe-inspiring sights such as Stirling Falls and Seal Rock. During the tour, knowledgeable guides provide information about the history and geology of the area, as well as point out any wildlife spotted along the way, including seals, dolphins, and penguins.

There are multiple vendors at the harbor offering cruises that typically last around two hours. You can simply arrive and purchase tickets on the spot, but we recommend booking in advance in peak season.

Milford Sound Cruise

The Milford Track is an iconic 33.5-mile hiking trail in Fiordland National Park and is considered one of the world's greatest walks, offering breathtaking views of mountain peaks, glacial valleys, and beautiful lakes.

The Milford Track takes four days and three nights to complete, with stays in huts along the trail. The track starts at the head of Lake Te Anau (you'll need a boat ride to get to the trailhead) and finishes at Sandfly Point, near a picturesque Milford Sound.

The Milford Track is open from late October to late April and requires bookings for huts and campsites far in advance, as soon as the booking opens.

Logistics tip. This is a one-way trail starting at the Te Anau Downs ferry and ending in Milford Sound, an hour drive away. We recommend parking your car at Te Anau Downs, completing the track, spending time in Milford Sound, and then taking one of many buses from the bus station heading to Te Anau. Just check that they make a stop at Te Anau Downs ferry parking.

Booking tip for late planners. We started planning our trip to New Zealand just two months in advance, and the huts on Milford Track were fully booked by that time. We still decided to go and just checked the booking website every day for cancellations. A few days before departure we got lucky and snatched a cancellation with the starting day just two days off from our initial plan. We had to reshuffle a good part of the trip and drove 12 hours straight in one day from Wellington to make the start of this hike. But in the end, as usual – it was all worth it!

Another great (and eco-friendly) way to explore the Fox Glacier area is by renting or taking a guided e-bike tour, which offers a unique way to experience the local landscapes.

After renting an e-bike in the nearby town, you will take a scenic ride along the winding roads that lead to Fox Glacier. Along the way, you'll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests, and you may even spot some local wildlife like kea birds or fur seals.

Once you arrive at Fox Glacier, you can park your e-bike (lock is usually provided with your rental) and take a guided hike to explore the glacier up close. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is not to be missed, and e-biking to the glacier is a fun and sustainable way to get there.

E-bike to Fox Glacier

The Fox Glacier is one of the most beautiful and accessible glaciers in New Zealand, and we recommend exploring it on a helicopter tour. It takes of from the Fox Glacier Heliport, follows a beautiful glacial river canyon, and finally lands on the snowfields of the Fox Glacier.

Then another adventure begins – the experienced guides will take you on a walking tour of the glacier. You will take in breathtaking views of surrounding mountains, admire a massive waterfall, and maybe even slide through some bright blue ice caves.

Routeburn Track

Roys Peak is an iconic hike just outside of Wanaka. It takes about 5 hours total, but the views from the top are simply stunning, making it all worth it.

The trail starts off with a steep climb through grassy hills, and as you gain elevation, the views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains become more and more spectacular. Once you reach the summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Southern Alps and the surrounding landscape.

The Roys Peak track is well-maintained and easy to follow. You can start early in the morning to avoid crowds and the heat, but we recommend starting in the afternoon to catch a breathtaking view of the landscape lit up by the sunset rays. Last time we visited (in March) we started at 4 pm and had the entire place to ourselves.

Be advised that the track is closed for lambing from October 1st to November 10th each year.

The tree's origins are unclear, but it is believed to have been planted by early settlers to the area over 80 years ago. Despite its age, the tree only gained widespread attention in recent years after becoming a popular photography spot on social media.

Kerosene Creek is a natural hot spring located outside Rotorua. The thermal waters of the creek flow through a bush setting with a beautiful waterfall, creating a natural and relaxing hot pool.

The water temperature is usually around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit and is suitable for swimming. The surrounding bush and native vegetation create a serene atmosphere that is perfect for soaking in the hot water and enjoying the natural surroundings.

Kerosene Creek is free to access and open year-round, just a short walk from a roadside parking. While there are no facilities on-site, visitors are welcome to bring their own food and drinks and enjoy a picnic in the bush.

Polynesian Spa is a world-renowned thermal spa with stunning views of Lake Rotorua. The spa features natural geothermal mineral waters that are sourced from two different springs, which are known for their therapeutic properties. You can choose from a variety of pools with different temperatures, ranging from 97 to 108 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Polynesian Spa also offers a range of spa treatments, including massages, facials, and body wraps, using local products such as manuka honey and volcanic mud. The spa also features a café serving light meals and refreshments, and a shop offering souvenirs and wellness products.

Mine Bay is a unique and picturesque experience, especially during the sunset hours. This scenic boat tour takes you on a journey to see the famous Maori rock carvings that are truly remarkable and showcase the skill and artistry of the Maori people.

These stunning carvings are only accessible by water, making the Sail to Mine Bay tour an essential activity when visiting Taupo. There are many vendors operating these tours, but we recommend Sail Barbary – an authentic local eco-sailing company, offering an incredibly beautiful and romantic sail boat experience.

Te Puia is a cultural center and geothermal attraction in Rotorua. It is home to the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, which promotes the traditional Maori arts of weaving, carving, and tattooing. You can watch master carvers and weavers at work and learn about the significance of these crafts to Maori culture.

In addition to its cultural offerings, Te Puia is also known for its geothermal activity, including geysers, mud pools, and hot springs. One of the most impressive geysers is the Pohutu geyser, which can erupt up to 100 feet high and erupts several times each day.

The site also includes a kiwi bird enclosure, where you can see the iconic New Zealand bird up close. Te Puia is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in New Zealand's rich Maori culture and unique geothermal landscapes.

Wai-O-Tapu is a geothermal wonderland, known for its stunning natural beauty, unique geothermal features, and the vibrant colors of its hot springs and mud pools.

This is our favorite geothermal spot in all of New Zealand, so consider shifting your plans to make sure Wai-O-Tapu lands outside of Wednesday or Thursday when the park is closed to the visitors.

You can explore a series of walking trails that wind through the park, taking in highlights such as the famous Champagne Pool, the Artist's Palette, and the Lady Knox Geyser, which erupts daily at 10:15 am. There are also guided tours available, as well as a visitor center and café on-site.

Waimangu Volcanic Valley is a stunning geothermal valley, home to a number of hot springs, geysers, and other geological features, including the world's largest hot spring - the Frying Pan Lake.

The walk takes 2-3 hours and passes by various sights including the Inferno Crater Lake and the Cathedral Rocks. Along the way, you can learn about the geology and history of the area from informative signs and guides.

The Tama Lakes Track is a stunning hiking trail that features stunning views of volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, and alpine lakes. It is a great alternative to Tongariro Alpine Crossing when it's closed due to bad weather.

This intermediate level track. The loop takes approximately six hours to complete and is a great option for hikers looking for a challenging and rewarding day hike.

The trail begins at Whakapapa Village and winds through the forest before reaching Taranaki Falls, a 65-foot waterfall. From there, the track leads to the Tama Lakes, a pair of stunning alpine lakes nestled in the heart of the park. The first lake is a bright turquoise color, while the second is a deep blue. Along the way, you will have incredible views of Mount Ruapehu (Mt Doom), Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Tongariro.

We recommend bringing plenty of water, good hiking shoes, and a rain jacket. The weather changes fast in these mountains, so better to be prepared for all conditions.

Tama Lakes Track

Tongariro Alpine Crossing is considered one of New Zealand's most iconic hikes, taking you on a journey through the stunning volcanic landscape of the Tongariro National Park.

The trail is a challenging 12-mile trek that takes around 6-8 hours to complete, passing by craters, volcanic lakes, and hot springs. The trail is well-maintained and offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, including Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe (also known as Mount Doom from the Lord of the Rings movies).

Important tip. The trail is one-way, so we recommend parking your car at the end of the trail (Ketetahi Rd), then taking a shuttle to the beginning of the trail, and hike back to the end of the trail where you car is parked. This way you don't have to worry about the logistics at the end of your day.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a unique and rewarding experience, but it is important to note that the trail can be challenging, with steep inclines and rocky terrain. You should also be prepared for the unpredictable alpine weather, which can change rapidly and bring strong winds, rain, and even snow at any time of the year.

We also recommend checking the official park page (in the links section) on the day of the hike to see if the trail is open. The weather changes fast, and it might close at the last moment.

Despite the challenges, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a must-do for any avid hiker or nature enthusiast visiting New Zealand.

Putangirua Pinnacles is a unique geological formation two hours away from Wellington. The unique landscape was formed millions of years ago by erosion from rivers and glaciers, leaving behind towering rock formations that are unlike anything else in the world.

The Pinnacles have a striking appearance, with towering, spiky pillars of rock rising up from the earth, and they have been the site of numerous films, including The Lord of the Rings trilogy. You can hike through the stunning valley to explore the Pinnacles up close, with the roundtrip journey taking around 1-2 hours. Along the way, there are a number of viewing platforms that provide breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.

The site is well-maintained and features a picnic area and public restrooms. While the hike can be steep in some areas, it is suitable for most fitness levels and is a great way to experience some of New Zealand's unique natural beauty.
