Cherry blossom season in Tokyo is one of the city’s most electric and fleeting spectacles. In 2026, sakura are expected to first bloom around March 19–21, with full bloom peaking between March 27–29. The peak window is short, so even a few days can make a big difference.
Some of Tokyo’s most iconic cherry blossom spots include Chidorigafuchi Park, where rows of sakura trees line the Imperial Palace moat, forming a stunning tunnel of soft pink petals — especially magical when viewed from a boat. Another favorite is the Meguro River Cherry Blossoms Promenade, where hundreds of trees arch over the river, creating a picture-perfect setting for evening strolls and hanami picnics beneath glowing lanterns.
Tokyo offers many other excellent cherry blossom viewing spots. Ueno Park is one of the most famous hanami locations in the country, with over a thousand cherry trees creating a lively festival atmosphere during peak bloom. For a quieter, more local feel, Shinjuku Gyoen combines several cherry tree varieties with spacious lawns, extending the viewing season slightly longer than most parks.
Another standout is Sumida Park, where cherry blossoms line the river with views of Tokyo Skytree in the background — especially beautiful at sunset. If you want something less crowded, Rikugien Garden offers a more refined experience, featuring a spectacular illuminated weeping cherry tree in the evenings.
