Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park

1 expert tip

Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park is a spring flower garden where pink, lilac and white moss phlox spills across the hills below Mount Mokoto. The effect is wonderfully surreal, especially where the pink torii of Yamatsumi Shrine rises from the flowers.

  1. Check the park's daily flowering photos before driving out, since the best color window shifts with spring weather.

Visit for the moss-phlox season when the park’s own information supports the trip. Do not use a spring flower photo as evidence of year-round blooms. [5]

More from Fyno’s curation

Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park is a spring flower garden where pink, lilac and white moss phlox spills across the hills below Mount Mokoto. The effect is wonderfully surreal, especially where the pink torii of Yamatsumi Shrine rises from the flowers. This is an eastern-Hokkaido outing near Abashiri, with its own short bloom season rather than a summer lavender stop.

Allow about two hours from the parking area to wander the lower flower paths, climb toward the elevated viewpoints and gazebo, and explore the shrine approach before returning. Hill paths and stairways make the complete walk more demanding than the flat entrance area. During the flower festival, a separately paid sightseeing vehicle offers another way uphill, but travelers with limited mobility should confirm boarding arrangements and the accessible route directly with the park. Stay on the paths and leave the flower beds untouched.

Aim for May, often mid- to late month, while checking the park's latest bloom reports before committing to a long drive. Some years flowers last into early June, but bloom and festival dates vary. Normal published opening hours are 9am–5pm. Buy ordinary admission on arrival, with sightseeing rides and other attractions charged separately. A free footbath may operate during the festival, so bring a small towel if you want to use it. Pet entry follows special festival rules and must be confirmed for your visit.

Arrive by car using the free park parking beside Route 102. From Abashiri, the regular bus reaches Higashimokoto village rather than the park itself, requiring a taxi for the final leg or a limited seasonal shuttle when announced. Shuttle reservations and operating dates need a separate check. Bring comfortable shoes, sun protection and a light windproof layer for the exposed slopes.

How long should I allow for Higashimokoto Shibazakura Park?
