Getting around
If you plan to explore remote areas or have a lot of luggage, we recommend getting a rental car. But if you plan exploring major cities, efficient public transportation systems within cities with bullet trains in between are a much better choice.
Language
In major cities and tourist destinations you'll find a lot of English signage, especially in airports, train stations, and hotels. Many restaurants, especially in tourist areas, have English menus or picture menus, making ordering food straightforward. Public transportation (trains, buses) typically offers announcements and signs in English. Once you venture into rural areas or smaller towns, English becomes less common. Signs may only be in Japanese, and locals are less likely to speak English fluently. You may need to rely more on translation apps or learning a few basic phrases in Japanese to communicate effectively. Keep in mind that Japanese are very polite and will often go out of their way to help foreign visitors, even if they don't speak English. People working in tourism tend to have some level of English, but understanding basic Japanese customs and learning a few words can enhance your experience.
Safety
Japan is considered a very safe travel destination with low crime rate. Exercise caution in crowded settings.
