Fall is chilly with more rain and wind. Two major benefits are a chance to catch the Northern Lights and visit ice caves that usually open in September. Crowds also disappear in early September.

Winters feature cold snowy weather, significantly limiting your transportation and activities. January and February are especially stormy. But winters open up some bucket list opportunities like observing the Northern Lights or visiting the best ice caves. You need to visit both in summer and winter to truly experience Iceland.

The Crystal Ice Cave is a unique natural wonder located inside the Vatnajökull glacier. The cave's walls are made of translucent ice that glows in various shades of blue and turquoise, creating a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere. Visitors can take guided tours of the cave, which typically involve a short hike and some crawling through narrow passages.

Keep in mind that the caves in this glacier are formed and destroyed every summer, so there is no single permanet cave. All the caves throughout the years feature the same unique characteristics though, making it a great place to visit.
