The Stórurð hike is a breathtaking trek known for its stunning landscapes and unique rock formations. The hike leads you to Stórurð, or "The Giant's Garden," a striking area filled with massive boulders, vibrant green moss, and picturesque turquoise ponds. Surrounded by towering mountains, the scenery offers a tranquil escape into nature and a chance to witness the raw beauty of Iceland's wilderness.

The hike is moderate in difficulty, with some steep sections and rocky terrain, but the well-marked path makes it accessible for most hikers. Along the way, you'll enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains, lush valleys, and the nearby sea, culminating in the sight of the massive boulders and serene ponds at Stórurð.

TIP: There are three completely different trails to reach Stórurð: from the Visitor center, from Gönguleidir Vista Point, and the shortest one that we highly recommend — just 7-miles long out and back (the first AllTrails link in the links section). What we love about Hotel Von besides a perfect location is the incredible views of the iconic Hallgrímskirkja church on one side, and Reykjavik Bay and surrounding mountains on the other side of the building. We stayed in a more affordable mountain view room and still had a great experience with panoramic views. Lower floors don't offer these views, so we recommend double-checking with the hotel staff after booking to be sure.

The hotel rooms are modern and quite comfortable with views of the black-sand beach on one side and mountain hills on the other. The hotel has a great restaurant with an incredible buffet breakfast and a fine dining experience in the evening. It also features a stylish bar and a fitness center.

We personally were surprised by the quality of service and attention to detail during our stay, making it a pretty good value for money.

The hotel's location serves as a perfect base for exploring the South region – the Reynisfjara Beach, Dyrhólaey, and Solheimasandur Plane Wreck are all 10-20 minutes away. And pretty much all the tours to the Katal Ice Cave also depart from this town.

Magma Hotel is a unique accommodation built into a lava field, surrounded by lush green valleys and a crater lake. It offers a more upscale experience with beautifully furnished rooms and exceptional service. The hotel also features a delicious bistro serving breakfast and dinner.

Be advised that the hotel has two sets of cabins — one next to the main building, and the other one on the hill. The first set of cabins is lake-front with beautiful unobstructed views of the lava fields, while the cabins on the hill have some infrastructure facility in their view, completely butchering the promised experience.

Make sure to contact their front desk and ensure you stay in the cabins next to the main building if you don't want to stare at the bright lights at night, especially while catching the Northern Lights in winter. Yes, that was our unfortunate experience in the winter of 2023.

You can particularly enjoy the proximity to key attractions like Reynisfjara’s black sand beach and Skógafoss waterfall, making it an ideal spot for exploring Iceland’s South region. The peaceful environment, combined with the privacy and scenic views, provides a tranquil retreat for your adventures.
