Sand Dune Arch is a unique and picturesque spot, tucked away in a hidden sandstone alcove, surrounded by towering red rocks and sandy trails. To reach the arch, you can take a short, easy hike through a narrow slot canyon and then scramble up a steep sand dune to reach the arch itself.

Once at the arch, you can walk underneath it and explore the sandy alcove. The arch provides some shade on hot days and is a great spot for photos. You can also continue past the arch to explore the nearby landscape, which includes more sand dunes, rock formations, and hiking trails.

Bryce Point is a popular lookout that provides a breathtaking panoramic view of the Bryce Amphitheater, which is a vast natural amphitheater of hoodoos (tall, thin spires of rock) created by erosion over millions of years.

From Bryce Point, you can see the stunning colors and formations of the hoodoos, which range in size from just a few feet to over 150 feet tall.

Bryce Point

Bryce Scenic Drive is a stunning 18-mile scenic route that winds through the park. The drive starts at the park's entrance station and ends at Rainbow Point, which is the highest point in the park at an elevation of over 9,000 feet. The drive takes you through the park's most breathtaking landscapes, including canyons, hoodoos (rock spires), and natural amphitheaters. The drive is particularly impressive during sunrise and sunset, when the vibrant colors of the canyon are amplified by the changing light. 

Along the way, you can stop at several overlooks and viewpoints to take in the spectacular vistas, and there are also several hiking trails that can be accessed from the scenic drive.

You should also keep an eye out for wildlife, such as mule deer and pronghorns, which can often be spotted along the roadside. Overall, Bryce Scenic Drive is a must-do activity for anyone visiting Bryce Canyon National Park.

Fairyland Trail is a beautiful and strenuous hiking trail that offers stunning views of the park's unique hoodoo rock formations. The trail is a 7.4-mile round-trip hike that begins and ends at Fairyland Point, and features a 1,580-foot (480 m) descent and ascent. The Figure Eight Trail is a combination of the Wall Street and Queens Garden Loop, followed by the Peekaboo Loop trail. The hike gets its name from the shape of the two loops when combined, which resembles the number eight.

Inspiration Point is a popular viewpoint in Bryce Canyon, offering panoramic views of Bryce Amphitheater, a natural amphitheater that is filled with thousands of hoodoos, spires, and other rock formations. Other highlights include the Glass Mountain, a massive deposit of selenite crystals, and the stunning Bentonite Hills. You can also take a short hike to the Upper Cathedral Valley Overlook, which provides stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Cathedral Valley Loop

Gifford Homestead is a historic pioneer home located in the Fruita Historic District of Capitol Reef National Park. The homestead was originally built by Calvin Pendleton and later sold to the Gifford family in the early 1900s. The Giffords used the home as a residence and for various agricultural purposes, including orchards and farming.

Today, Gifford Homestead serves as a visitor center and gift shop for the park, offering the opportunity to learn about the history of the homestead and the families who lived there. The gift shop sells a variety of locally made items, including pies, jams, and other goods made from fruit grown in the Fruita orchards. In addition, the homestead offers educational programs and demonstrations throughout the year, such as butter-making and bread-baking.

Gifford Homestead

Goblin Valley is a state park located in southeastern Utah, known for its unique landscape of hoodoos, or mushroom-shaped rock formations, scattered across a valley floor. The formations are made of Entrada sandstone, and are believed to be around 170 million years old. The park offers various hiking trails and rock scrambling opportunities for visitors.

One of the most popular trails at Goblin Valley is the Goblin's Lair Trail, which leads to a large cave that was formed by the erosion of the sandstone. Other notable trails include the Carmel Canyon Trail, which provides views of the surrounding mesas and buttes, and the Curtis Bench Trail, which takes you to the top of a mesa for panoramic views of the park. In addition to hiking, you can also camp overnight at Goblin Valley, stargaze, and explore the valley's unique rock formations.

Hickman Natural Bridge is a popular hiking destination in Capitol Reef National Park, known for its stunning geological features and scenic beauty. The trail to Hickman Natural Bridge is a moderate 2-mile long. The hike starts from a parking area along Scenic Drive and follows the canyon bottom upstream.

The natural bridge itself is an impressive sight, stretching 133 feet across a narrow canyon and rising 125 feet above the floor. It was formed by erosion over thousands of years, as water gradually wore away the sandstone walls of the canyon. You can walk under the bridge and explore the alcoves and archways on either side.

We recommend visiting Hickman Natural Bridge in the morning or late afternoon when the sun is low in the sky and the colors of the rock formations are at their most vibrant.

Lower Calf Creek Falls is a stunning waterfall located in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The trail to the falls is 6 miles round trip and follows Calf Creek through a scenic canyon. 

Along the way, you will see ancient petroglyphs and pictographs on the canyon walls, as well as a variety of plants and wildlife. The trail is relatively easy and is suitable for hikers of all ages and skill levels. At the end of the trail, hikers are rewarded with the sight of the beautiful Lower Calf Creek Falls, which drops 126 feet into a pool of emerald green water.

You can swim in the pool beneath the falls, so we recommend grabbing your bathing suite for quite a refreshing experience in hot summer days.

Panorama and Sunset Points are two popular viewpoints in the park that offer stunning panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape.

Panorama Point is right at the parking lot, but you will need a short hike to get to the Sunset Point.

The Petroglyph Panels in Capitol Reef National Park are a fascinating attraction if you are interested in history and ancient rock art. The panels consist of hundreds of petroglyphs, or rock carvings, created by the Fremont people over a thousand years ago. Upper Cathedral Valley Overlook is a stunning viewpoint of Cathedral Valley, a remote and rugged section of the park that is known for its towering sandstone monoliths and colorful rock formations.

It is quite a detour from the rest of attractions, but it offers an awe-inspiring panoramic view of Cathedral Valley, making it well worth the extra driving time.

To reach the overlook, you have to drive along the unpaved Cathedral Valley Loop Road, which is recommended for high-clearance vehicles. The overlook is a short hike from the parking area, and the trail offers some incredible views of the surrounding landscape. The overlook itself is perched atop a rocky outcrop, and you can take in sweeping vistas of Cathedral Valley and the nearby Henry Mountains. 

The best times to visit the overlook are early morning and late afternoon, when the light is most favorable for photography and the temperatures are more moderate.

The Bright Angel Trail is one of the most well-known trails in the park and offers hikers stunning views of the canyon. The trail is a 9.3-mile round trip, and it is recommended for experienced hikers due to its steepness and length (check AllTrails link for more details).

The Bright Angel Trail begins at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and descends over 4,380 feet into the canyon. Along the way, you can stop at various points to take in the breathtaking views of the canyon. The trail is well-maintained and has several rest stops and water stations along the way. However, you should be prepared for changing weather conditions and extreme temperatures, especially during the summer months. The trail ends at the Colorado River, where hikers can rest and enjoy the views before making the steep ascent back up to the South Rim.

Bright Angel Trail

Havasu Falls is a stunning waterfall located on the Havasupai Indian Reservation in the Grand Canyon, known for its vibrant blue-green water that contrasts with the red rock of the canyon walls.

The hike to Havasu Falls is approximately 20 miles round trip and starting 2023, requires a campground or lodge permit from the Havasupai tribe to visit. You can also use a helicopter taxi ($85 per person) that is departing from the trailhead parking location on first come first serve basis.

The Little Colorado River Gorge is a stunning natural wonder located on the eastern edge of the Grand Canyon National Park. Little Colorado River Gorge

Mather Point is a popular lookout point located on the South Rim of the canyon and provides spectacular views of the natural wonder. You can see the vast expanse of the canyon, with its layers of rock formations in shades of red, brown, and orange. The point is named after Stephen Mather, the first director of the National Park Service.

Mather Point is easily accessible and is one of the first stops for many visitors to the park. It is also a great place to catch a sunrise or sunset over the canyon, as the colors of the rocks change with the shifting light. There are hiking trails and picnic areas nearby, as well as a visitor center where visitors can learn more about the park and its history. Mather Point is a must-see destination for anyone visiting the Grand Canyon.

The South Kaibab Trail is known for its breathtaking views and challenging terrain, making it a favorite among experienced hikers.

There are multiple versions of this trail, ranging from 2 to 15 miles roundtrip. We recommend going no further than the Skeleton Point as a day hike (6 miles roundtrip) because of a very steep descend afterwards. Check the AllTrails link for more details.

The trail begins near Yaki Point on the South Rim of the canyon and descends to the Colorado River. Along the way, you can expect to encounter steep drops, switchbacks, and narrow sections of the trail that are carved into the canyon walls. The trail provides incredible views from the start, so you can turn back at any point if you don't feel like completing the entire route.

Despite its difficulty, the South Kaibab Trail offers some of the best views in the Grand Canyon, including panoramas of the Inner Gorge and the Phantom Ranch area. You can also see geological formations like the O'Neill Butte and Cedar Ridge, as well as wildlife such as mule deer and California condors.

While the trail is accessible year-round, we recommend to hike in the spring and fall when temperatures are cooler. Come prepared with plenty of water and snacks, as there is no potable water along the trail.

South Kaibab Trail

The South Rim Trail is a scenic walking trail that runs for approximately 13 miles along the rim of the Grand Canyon's South Rim. It offers breathtaking views of the canyon, including some of its most iconic landmarks, such as Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Hopi Point. Along the trail, you can find a number of informative exhibits and interpretive displays that provide information on the geology, wildlife, and history of the Grand Canyon.

The trail is well-maintained and relatively easy, making it a popular choice for families and casual hikers. You can also hop on and off the park's shuttle bus to speed up your exploration.

The Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour is a unique and exciting way to experience the Grand Canyon. There are multiple options and vendors, but we love the ones that land in the canyon so you can appreciate the majestic walls of the canyon in a pretty private setting.

You will enjoy a narrated helicopter flight over Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam before arriving at the Grand Canyon’s West Rim. Descend 4,000 feet to the Canyon floor where you’ll enjoy light picnic served with champagne and approximately 30 minutes to explore before returning to Las Vegas.

Hoover Dam is an iconic monument – concrete arch-gravity dam located on the border between the states of Arizona and Nevada. The dam was built during the Great Depression and completed in 1936. It was named after President Herbert Hoover and was designed to control the Colorado River and provide water and electricity to the southwestern United States.

Driving through the dam is already a scenic experience, but you can also take guided tours of the Hoover Dam, which include a visit to the power plant, observation deck, and the surrounding area. There are also several hiking trails in the area, as well as opportunities for boating and fishing on Lake Mead, the reservoir created by the dam.

Valley of Fire State Park features stunning red sandstone formations, petroglyphs, and unique desert wildlife, and is conveniently located on the way from Las Vegas to Zion National Park.

There are several hiking trails to explore, as well as campsites, and picnic areas, and scenic drives. Some of the most popular spots to visit include Elephant Rock, Arch Rock, Fire Wave, and Atlatl Rock.

Valley Of Fire

Balanced Rock is a large sandstone boulder that sits precariously on a narrower pedestal, giving the appearance of being balanced. The total height of the formation is approximately 39 feet, with the boulder itself measuring about 55 feet in length. The pedestal is only about 3 feet in diameter and stands at a height of about 17 feet. Balanced Rock is a popular attraction in the park and can be seen from the road or from a nearby parking area. You can also take a short hike to get a closer look at the formation.

The formation is believed to have been created by natural erosion processes over millions of years. The harder sandstone rock at the top of the boulder is more resistant to erosion than the softer sandstone rock at the base. As the softer rock was gradually eroded away, the harder rock at the top was left balancing on the pedestal.

Balanced Rock

Dead Horse Point is a popular outdoor destination near Moab, featuring stunning views of the surrounding canyons and desert landscapes. We recommend stopping at the main overlook to take in the views, but if you have extra time there's plenty of short and long scenic hikes in the park.

The park gets its name from a local legend that states cowboys used the area to corral wild mustangs and then blocked off the only entrance, leaving them to die of thirst. Despite the morbid history, it is a great stop with incredible views.

Dead Horse Point

Delicate Arch is one of the most iconic natural arches in the world. The arch is made of Entrada Sandstone and stands 52 feet tall and 32 feet wide. The arch is free-standing and is the most famous feature of the park. Hiking to Delicate Arch is a popular activity, and the trail is 3 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 480 feet. The trail starts at Wolfe Ranch and winds its way up a slickrock slope before arriving at the overlook for Delicate Arch. You can also hike down to the base of the arch for a closer look.

Delicate Arch is not only a natural wonder, but it is also a symbol of the American Southwest. It has been featured on Utah license plates and was even used as a backdrop for the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics. At sunset, the arch glows a brilliant orange-red color and is a stunning sight to behold. 

We recommend visiting is in the early morning or late afternoon when the lighting is optimal and crowds are little.

Delicate Arch

Devil's Garden is the best way to see most of the arches in one go. The trail is known for its unique rock formations, including sandstone arches, spires, and other geological wonders.

The trail can be hiked as an out-and-back, or as a loop that is roughly 7.2 miles in total length. The trail is rated as strenuous overall due to the uneven terrain, steep drops, and exposure to the elements. The first part of the trail is pretty easy and offers spectacular scenery, so you can turn back early if not feeling like it.

The Devil's Garden Trail takes you past several of the park's most famous arches, including Landscape Arch, Navajo Arch, Partition Arch, and Double O Arch. Along the way, hikers can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding canyonlands and red rock formations.

We recommend visiting outside of the hottest summer months, but if you ended up here in summer – bring plenty of water and good sun protection.

Devil’s Garden

Double Arch is another beautiful arch in the park. This impressive double arch is formed by two parallel arches that share a common end. The larger arch has a span of 144 feet and a height of 112 feet, making it one of the largest arches in the park.

Double Arch is accessible via a short, easy trail from the parking lot. The trail leads you to the base of the arches where you can admire their impressive size and take pictures. The arches were formed by erosion from water and ice, as well as from the stresses of gravity and weathering. 

You can also explore the area around the arches. Many people enjoy climbing on the sandstone formations. Double Arch is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset when the colors of the sandstone formations are at their most vibrant.

Grand View Point is a popular hiking and sightseeing destination located in the Island in the Sky. The Grand View Point trail is a 2-mile round-trip hike that takes you along the canyon rim to a stunning panoramic overlook. The trail is considered easy to moderate, with some uneven terrain and steep drop-offs. Along the way, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the canyonlands, including the distant La Sal Mountains and the winding Colorado River far below. The Grand View Point trail is a must-visit for anyone exploring the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park.

To reach Mesa Arch, you can take a short, easy hike that is less than a mile round trip. The trail winds through sandstone fins and offers stunning views of the surrounding canyons. At the end of the trail, you are rewarded with a spectacular view of the sun rising over the arch and the canyon below. The arch itself is only about 50 feet wide and 30 feet high, but it's the incredible view that makes it one of the most popular spots in Canyonlands National Park.

Newspaper Rock is a famous petroglyph site, featuring hundreds of ancient carvings, dating back over 2,000 years. It was likely used as a communal storytelling and recording location by the indigenous people who lived in the area. The petroglyphs depict a variety of animals, human figures, and abstract designs, and offer a glimpse into the rich cultural history of the region.

You can view the site from a nearby viewing platform, with interpretive signage helps explain the history and significance of the petroglyphs. The site is easily accessible from nearby state and national parks, and is a must-see destination for anyone interested in ancient rock art and Native American history.

Newspaper Rock

Butler Wash Ruins is an archaeological site that consists of a group of well-preserved ancient structures that were built by the Ancestral Puebloans over 700 years ago. The site is located near the edge of a sandstone mesa and offers spectacular views of the surrounding canyonlands.

The main attraction at Butler Wash Ruins is a hike that takes you through the ancient structures and around the nearby rock formations. You can see how the Ancestral Puebloans constructed their buildings using local sandstone, and how they incorporated the natural features of the landscape into their design. There are several different trails that you can choose from, depending on your level of fitness and the amount of time you have available.

The site is also home to a small museum, which features exhibits about the history and culture of the Ancestral Puebloans who once lived in the area.

Butler Wash Ruins

Goosenecks State Park is a beautiful and unique natural wonder located in San Juan County in Utah. The park is named after the winding, deep canyons that the San Juan River has carved out over millions of years, creating a series of stunning gooseneck bends. The park is situated on a mesa overlooking the San Juan River, offering breathtaking views of the canyons and the surrounding landscape.
