Getting around
Rental car is the best way for proper exploration. Most back roads are unpaved, muddy, and with potholes, so we strongly recommend renting a 4x4 SUV for peace of mind in any weather. True adventurers go with 4x4 campers to experience Costa Rica's stunning campsites.
Language
English is widely spoken in major tourist hubs, beach resorts, national parks, and adventure tour companies. Most locals who work in tourism β hotels, restaurants, tour guides βspeak fluent English. Signage and menus in these areas are often bilingual (Spanish/English). In rural parts of Costa Rica, English is less common, and basic Spanish might be necessary. However, Costa Ricans (Ticos) are very friendly and often try to communicate with travelers even if their English is limited. While you can get by with only English in tourist areas, we recommend learning a few basic Spanish phrases as they will go a long way in smaller towns and with older locals.
Safety
Costa Rica is one of the safest travel destinations in Central America. Still, exercise basic safety measures, especially traveling solo in isolated areas near big cities.
