Paint Mines Interpretive Park is a geological wonder in the plains east of Colorado Springs — an unexpected otherworldly landscape of colorful spires, hoodoos, and clay formations eroded by wind and water into a labyrinth of pale yellows, lavenders, pinks, and reds. Set within a prairie landscape with no dramatic mountain backdrop, the formations feel all the more surprising and alien.

The 4-mile trail system winds through the badlands, with the most dramatic formations concentrated in the southeast corner of the park. The colored clay layers represent different mineral deposits — iron oxides for the reds and oranges, manganese for the purples — laid down over millions of years and exposed by erosion.

The area was used for thousands of years by Plains tribes who mined the colored clays for pottery and pigments, and archaeological excavations have uncovered projectile points and other artifacts dating back nearly 9,000 years.

TIP: Visit in the hour before sunset when the slanting light intensifies the colors and creates dramatic shadows in the gullies.
