8 days in Austria

Austria Christmas Trail

I like Austria most when the trip moves between distinct experiences: Vienna’s ceremonial winter glow, Salzburg’s historic lanes, and Tyrol’s mountain culture. Rail keeps the cities and resort gateways connected, while local lifts and shuttles make the ski days feel focused rather than like one long road trip.

Austria · Make the plan fit your dates

Three cities, with time between.

The eight saved days run east to west: three Vienna nights, two Salzburg nights and two Innsbruck nights. Use the rail-transfer days for one light evening outing.

Leave room for the journey

Vienna–Salzburg and Salzburg–Innsbruck are separate rail journeys. Protect roughly half a day for each hotel move, including station access, luggage and check-in. Confirm the actual train and fare for your date.

Have an indoor alternative

Hellbrunn’s Monday closure may require swapping Salzburg days. In rain, keep the market walk short and check a museum’s own hours and tickets. No indoor attraction is included automatically.

Beyond Vienna

Salzburg’s Dom and Residenzplatz market: 19 November 2026–1 January 2027. Hellbrunn: 19 November–24 December 2026; closed Mondays except 21 December. Swap the two Salzburg days if needed.

Innsbruck Old Town: 13 November–23 December 2026; Hungerburg: 20 November 2026–6 January 2027. A late-December trip needs a different Old Town market stop.

Your 8-day route at a glance

Explore Austria

Start with this expert-curated route, then customize the days and stops in your trip. Stays below are suggestions; availability depends on your dates.

Day 1Vienna ArrivalVienna

Plan the day: Keep arrival simple: settle in, then visit Rathausplatz only if the arrival leaves time before closing.

If plans change: Use a central dinner or café if delayed; the market is not open throughout November.

Things to do

  1. Vienna Christmas Market at Rathausplatz1-3h

Suggested stay

Day 2Palace MarketsVienna

Plan the day: Schönbrunn is west of the centre and Belvedere southeast. Use transit and make one palace market the priority; palace interiors need separate tickets and time.

If plans change: Keep one palace market and move the other to a free slot rather than rushing both.

Things to do

  1. Schönbrunn Palace Christmas Market1-3h
  2. Belvedere Christmas Market1-2h

Suggested stay

Day 3Craft and DesignVienna

Plan the day: Visit Karlsplatz after its noon opening, then continue to Spittelberg later in the day. Leave room for warming-up breaks.

If plans change: Use museum-quarter indoor time during heavy rain and keep a shorter market evening.

Things to do

  1. Art Advent at Karlsplatz1-2h
  2. Spittelberg Christmas Market1-2h

Suggested stay

Day 4Rail to SalzburgSalzburg

Plan the day: Take the Vienna–Salzburg train, check in, then walk the Dom and Residenzplatz market. Budget roughly half a day door to door rather than only the train ride.

If plans change: Take a later market walk after settling in; recheck the dated ÖBB connection.

Things to do

  1. Salzburg Christkindlmarkt at Dom and Residenzplatz1-2h

Suggested stay

Day 5Hellbrunn AdventSalzburg

Plan the day: Make Hellbrunn a separate outing south of Salzburg. In 2026 it is closed Mondays except 21 December; swap this day with the city-market day when necessary.

If plans change: Stay with the city market or an indoor Salzburg visit when Hellbrunn is closed.

Things to do

  1. Hellbrunn Advent Magic1-3h

Suggested stay

Day 6Rail to InnsbruckInnsbruck

Plan the day: Travel Salzburg–Innsbruck, then visit the Old Town market if open. Keep this as a transfer day with one evening focus.

If plans change: The Old Town market ends 23 December. After that date rework the saved stop; the city itself remains a separate visit.

Things to do

  1. Innsbruck Old Town Christmas Market1-2h
Day 7Hungerburg PanoramaInnsbruck

Plan the day: Go up to Hungerburg only within the market and funicular operating windows. Build in the return to Innsbruck before onward evening plans.

If plans change: Stay in town when mountain weather or service interruptions make the ascent unsuitable.

Things to do

  1. Hungerburg Panorama Christmas Market1h
Day 8Golden Roof FarewellInnsbruck

Plan the day: Walk the Golden Roof quarter if departure allows. Confirm the station or airport connection and leave a buffer for luggage and winter disruption.

If plans change: Depart directly when timing is tight; no overnight is selected on this final day.

Things to do

  1. Innsbruck Old Town and Golden Roof1-3h
