Laguna de Los Tres, also known as Cerro Fitz Roy, is one of the most iconic hikes in Patagonia. The scenery on this full-day hike is absolutely stunning with turquoise lakes, hanging glaciers, and the magnificent granite spires of the Patagonian Andes.

TIP: Instead of a regular out-and-back hike from El Chalten, we recommend taking a taxi to Hosteria El Pilar (just ask at your hotel front desk) and starting the trek via Piedras Blancas to Mount Fitz Roy and then hike back down to El Chalten. This way you’ll explore more and avoid crowds for a good part of your day.

TIP: Don’t forget to pack a lunch box. Partly because there’s no food on this trail, but more importantly – you'll have a chance to enjoy your meal with the stunning view of the Laguna de Los Tres lake and massive Mount Fitz Roy as its backdrop.

The surrounding area also offers opportunities for hiking, bird watching, and wildlife spotting, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.

Our favorite activity in the area besides the W-trek itself is kayaking next to the Gery Glacier and its icebergs (check the list of region highlights for more details). It is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, just steps away from the refugio.

Refugio Grey

Refugio Paine Grande is a mountain refuge on the shores of Lake Pehoé. It offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and serves as a popular base camp for hikers and nature enthusiasts exploring the park's renowned trails, including the iconic W Trek and the challenging O Circuit.

The refuge provides comfortable and basic accommodations in dormitory-style rooms, allowing you to rest and recharge after a day of outdoor adventure. Amenities include a dining area, bar, and common spaces where you can relax, socialize, and share stories of your experiences in the park.

Keep in mind that Paine Grande can only be accessed by a ferry accross Lake Pehoe, or hiking from Grey or other park areas. Also make sure to book at least a couple months in advance, ideally before the season starts in October.
