Wai-O-Tapu is a geothermal wonderland, known for its stunning natural beauty, unique geothermal features, and the vibrant colors of its hot springs and mud pools.

This is our favorite geothermal spot in all of New Zealand, so consider shifting your plans to make sure Wai-O-Tapu lands outside of Wednesday or Thursday when the park is closed to the visitors.

You can explore a series of walking trails that wind through the park, taking in highlights such as the famous Champagne Pool, the Artist's Palette, and the Lady Knox Geyser, which erupts daily at 10:15 am. There are also guided tours available, as well as a visitor center and café on-site.

The Abel Tasman Coast Track is an iconic 37-mile trail located in the Abel Tasman National Park. The trail takes you through a spectacular coastal landscape of golden beaches, turquoise waters, lush native forests, and granite cliffs.

The track can be completed in three to five days, depending on your level of fitness and how long you want to take in the scenery. The trail is suitable for hikers of all levels, with well-maintained trails and plenty of accommodation and camping options available along the way. Abel Tasman Coast Track

The Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve is the largest dark sky reserve in the world. It covers an area of 1,660 square miles and is home to some of the clearest and darkest skies in the world, making it an ideal location for stargazing and astrophotography.

The reserve is located near Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, which provides a stunning backdrop for nighttime sky viewing. With little light pollution in the area, the Milky Way and other galaxies are easily visible to the naked eye.

In addition, the reserve is home to a number of astronomical observatories, including the Mount John Observatory, which provides guided stargazing tours and educational programs. Aoraki Dark Skies Reserve

Enjoy stunning views of the glacial lakes from the Blue Lakes and Tasman Glacier lookouts, located a short hike from one another. They provide an awe-inspiring panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, lakes, and Tasman Glacier – the largest glacier in New Zealand, covering an area of over 40 square miles.


The Blue Lakes are formed by the melting of the Tasman Glacier, and their vivid blue color is caused by the refraction of sunlight on the glacial silt in the water.

A short hike from the Blue Lakes lookout takes you to the Tasman Glacier lookout, where you can witness the glacier up close and marvel at its sheer size and beauty.

Hooker Valley Track is stunning hiking trail located in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The trail is easy, 6-mile long round trip, and takes around 3 hours to complete. The highlight of the trail is the stunning views of the Southern Alps, including Mount Cook, New Zealand's highest peak.

The trail follows the Hooker River through the Hooker Valley, passing by alpine meadows, suspension bridges, and glacial lakes. The trail ends at the Hooker Glacier, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the glacier and Mount Cook. Along the way, you can also spot kea, New Zealand's native mountain parrot.

The Hooker Valley Track is a must-do for anyone visiting Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. It's a relatively easy hike with plenty of beautiful scenery along the way, and the views at the end are simply breathtaking.

Lake Pukaki is a stunningly beautiful glacial lake located in the Mackenzie Basin. It is fed by the glacial meltwater from the Southern Alps, which gives the lake its characteristic bright blue color.

Lake Pukaki is a popular spot for photography, hiking, fishing, and boating. There are several walking trails along the lake shore which offer stunning views of the lake and the Southern Alps. We recommend Lake Pukaki Shoreline Walk.

Lake Pukaki is also known for stunning natural beauty and vibrant colors of nearby lupin fields. The fields are in bloom from November to January and offer a beautiful contrast to the turquoise waters of Lake Pukaki and the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps in the distance. It's important to note that while the lupin fields are beautiful, they are also fragile ecosystems, and you should take care not to damage the plants or their habitats.

Lake Tekapo is a picturesque lake located in the heart of the Mackenzie Basin, renowned for its stunning turquoise-blue color, which is caused by the presence of finely ground rock particles in the glacial meltwater that feeds it. Surrounded by mountains and with the Church of the Good Shepherd located on its shore, Lake Tekapo is a breathtaking sight to behold.

In addition to its natural beauty, Lake Tekapo offers a range of outdoor activities for visitors to enjoy. These include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, fishing, and skiing during the winter months. The Tasman Lake Boat Cruise a unique experience that takes you on a journey across the stunning Tasman Glacier terminal lake, where you will get up close and personal with floating icebergs and towering glaciers.

The boat cruises through the iceberg-studded lake and provides an opportunity to see the incredible ice formations and turquoise waters up close. Mount Eden is a dormant volcano and one of Auckland's most iconic natural landmarks. It offers stunning panoramic views of Auckland and the surrounding areas from its 640-foot summit.

Chances are you are quite jet-lagged from your long flight, and this spot is just perfect to relax and take in the views on your first day in New Zealand. Just walk to the top of the mountain and explore the crater and surrounding parkland. The hike to the summit takes around 20-30 minutes and is relatively easy. Along the way, you will enjoy views of the city skyline, the Waitemata Harbour, and Rangitoto Island.

At the top, there is a large grassy area perfect for a picnic or simply taking in the breathtaking views. The area is also rich in history and is considered a sacred site by the local Maori people.

Sky Tower is a landmark observation and telecommunications tower in Auckland. It is the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere and offers breathtaking views of the city from its observation deck, which is located 722 feet above ground level.

Waiheke Island

The Castle Hill area is a unique geological formation consisting of limestone boulders that have been sculpted over millions of years by weathering and erosion. The rocks have taken on a variety of shapes, many of which resemble castles, hence the name Castle Hill. The area is popular among rock climbers, hikers, and boulderers who come to admire and explore the formations.

In addition to its unique geological features, the Castle Hill area is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, including snow-capped mountains, alpine meadows, and crystal-clear rivers. You can go hiking, camping, mountain biking, or simply take a leisurely stroll to soak in the beauty of the area.

The area is also known for its unique flora and fauna, including the kea, a native parrot that is often seen in the area. Castle Hill is located off the beaten path and is a must-visit sight for nature lovers.

The tours take you along a boardwalk that leads to a viewing area where the Royal Albatross can be observed in their natural habitat.

In addition to the Royal Albatross, the centre is also home to a variety of other seabirds, including petrels and shags. The centre offers a range of activities, including wildlife tours, photography tours, and educational programs.

The Kepler Track is an iconic 37-mile hiking trail known for its breathtaking views of the Fiordland National Park and the Southern Alps. It is considered one of New Zealand's Great Walks.

The trail starts and ends near the town of Te Anau and usually takes 3-4 days to complete, with several huts available for overnight stays along the way. The trail passes through a variety of landscapes, including beech forests, alpine tussocks, and mountain ridges, and offers an opportunity to see unique flora and fauna like endangered kea parrot and the Fiordland crested penguin.

Hiking the Kepler Track requires a moderate level of fitness, as the trail involves steep climbs and descents, and the weather can be unpredictable, with snow and rain possible even in the summer months.

However, the stunning scenery and the sense of accomplishment at completing the track make it a must-do experience for outdoor enthusiasts visiting New Zealand.

The Milford Highway is considered one of the most scenic drives in the world, running through the stunning Fiordland National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its spectacular landscapes, waterfalls, and fiords.

The road passes stunning natural landmarks, including the Mirror Lakes, the Eglinton Valley, and the Homer Tunnel, which is a mile-long tunnel carved through solid granite. The road then descends towards the Milford Sound.

We recommend taking your time and stop whenever you like along the way to experience some of the most breathtaking natural scenery in the world.

Milford Sound is a natural wonder located in Fiordland National Park, our favorite fjord in the world. The best way to experience this magnificent sight is to take a scenic cruise through the sound and its surrounding mountains, waterfalls, and wildlife.

You will witness the famous Mitre Peak, towering 5,511 feet above the water, as well as other awe-inspiring sights such as Stirling Falls and Seal Rock. During the tour, knowledgeable guides provide information about the history and geology of the area, as well as point out any wildlife spotted along the way, including seals, dolphins, and penguins.

There are multiple vendors at the harbor offering cruises that typically last around two hours. You can simply arrive and purchase tickets on the spot, but we recommend booking in advance in peak season.

Milford Sound Cruise

The Milford Track is an iconic 33.5-mile hiking trail in Fiordland National Park and is considered one of the world's greatest walks, offering breathtaking views of mountain peaks, glacial valleys, and beautiful lakes.

The Milford Track takes four days and three nights to complete, with stays in huts along the trail. The track starts at the head of Lake Te Anau (you'll need a boat ride to get to the trailhead) and finishes at Sandfly Point, near a picturesque Milford Sound.

The Milford Track is open from late October to late April and requires bookings for huts and campsites far in advance, as soon as the booking opens.

Logistics tip. This is a one-way trail starting at the Te Anau Downs ferry and ending in Milford Sound, an hour drive away. We recommend parking your car at Te Anau Downs, completing the track, spending time in Milford Sound, and then taking one of many buses from the bus station heading to Te Anau. Just check that they make a stop at Te Anau Downs ferry parking.

Booking tip for late planners. We started planning our trip to New Zealand just two months in advance, and the huts on Milford Track were fully booked by that time. We still decided to go and just checked the booking website every day for cancellations. A few days before departure we got lucky and snatched a cancellation with the starting day just two days off from our initial plan. We had to reshuffle a good part of the trip and drove 12 hours straight in one day from Wellington to make the start of this hike. But in the end, as usual – it was all worth it!

Another great (and eco-friendly) way to explore the Fox Glacier area is by renting or taking a guided e-bike tour, which offers a unique way to experience the local landscapes.

After renting an e-bike in the nearby town, you will take a scenic ride along the winding roads that lead to Fox Glacier. Along the way, you'll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests, and you may even spot some local wildlife like kea birds or fur seals.

Once you arrive at Fox Glacier, you can park your e-bike (lock is usually provided with your rental) and take a guided hike to explore the glacier up close. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that is not to be missed, and e-biking to the glacier is a fun and sustainable way to get there.

E-bike to Fox Glacier

The Fox Glacier is one of the most beautiful and accessible glaciers in New Zealand, and we recommend exploring it on a helicopter tour. It takes of from the Fox Glacier Heliport, follows a beautiful glacial river canyon, and finally lands on the snowfields of the Fox Glacier.

Then another adventure begins – the experienced guides will take you on a walking tour of the glacier. You will take in breathtaking views of surrounding mountains, admire a massive waterfall, and maybe even slide through some bright blue ice caves.

This is an unforgettable experience and will most likely be one of the top highlights of your trip to New Zealand. It is a must-do activity for anyone looking to add some adventure to their trip.

Routeburn Track

Roys Peak is an iconic hike just outside of Wanaka. It takes about 5 hours total, but the views from the top are simply stunning, making it all worth it.

The trail starts off with a steep climb through grassy hills, and as you gain elevation, the views of Lake Wanaka and the surrounding mountains become more and more spectacular. Once you reach the summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Southern Alps and the surrounding landscape.

The Roys Peak track is well-maintained and easy to follow. You can start early in the morning to avoid crowds and the heat, but we recommend starting in the afternoon to catch a breathtaking view of the landscape lit up by the sunset rays. Last time we visited (in March) we started at 4 pm and had the entire place to ourselves.

Be advised that the track is closed for lambing from October 1st to November 10th each year.

That Wanaka Tree (a.k.a. the Lonely Tree), is a willow tree located at the southern end of Lake Wanaka. It is a popular photography spot due to its unique location, growing out of the water near the shore of the lake, with the stunning Southern Alps in the background.

Hobbiton Village is a movie set and natural park built for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. It is now open to all of the fans from around the world.

The set features 44 unique hobbit holes, including Bag End, the home of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, and the Green Dragon Inn, where you can enjoy a drink or meal. Kerosene Creek is a natural hot spring located outside Rotorua. The thermal waters of the creek flow through a bush setting with a beautiful waterfall, creating a natural and relaxing hot pool.

The water temperature is usually around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit and is suitable for swimming. The surrounding bush and native vegetation create a serene atmosphere that is perfect for soaking in the hot water and enjoying the natural surroundings.

Kerosene Creek is free to access and open year-round, just a short walk from a roadside parking. While there are no facilities on-site, visitors are welcome to bring their own food and drinks and enjoy a picnic in the bush.

The trail begins at Whakapapa Village and winds through the forest before reaching Taranaki Falls, a 65-foot waterfall. From there, the track leads to the Tama Lakes, a pair of stunning alpine lakes nestled in the heart of the park. The first lake is a bright turquoise color, while the second is a deep blue. Along the way, you will have incredible views of Mount Ruapehu (Mt Doom), Mount Ngauruhoe, and Mount Tongariro.

We recommend bringing plenty of water, good hiking shoes, and a rain jacket. The weather changes fast in these mountains, so better to be prepared for all conditions.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing is considered one of New Zealand's most iconic hikes, taking you on a journey through the stunning volcanic landscape of the Tongariro National Park.

The trail is a challenging 12-mile trek that takes around 6-8 hours to complete, passing by craters, volcanic lakes, and hot springs. The trail is well-maintained and offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape, including Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe (also known as Mount Doom from the Lord of the Rings movies).

Important tip. The trail is one-way, so we recommend parking your car at the end of the trail (Ketetahi Rd), then taking a shuttle to the beginning of the trail, and hike back to the end of the trail where you car is parked. This way you don't have to worry about the logistics at the end of your day.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a unique and rewarding experience, but it is important to note that the trail can be challenging, with steep inclines and rocky terrain. You should also be prepared for the unpredictable alpine weather, which can change rapidly and bring strong winds, rain, and even snow at any time of the year.

We also recommend checking the official park page (in the links section) on the day of the hike to see if the trail is open. The weather changes fast, and it might close at the last moment.
