Spring is a bit chilly and not as green as summer, but most of the activities are open and crowds are not yet present. Roads in the Highlands and some hiking trails might still be closed.

Summer offers the most diverse Icelandic experience with warm weather, dramatic landscapes, roads and trails open, and Midnight Sun as a bonus. The crowds are plenty though.

Fall is chilly with more rain and wind. Two major benefits are a chance to catch the Northern Lights and visit ice caves that usually open in September. Crowds also disappear in early September.

Winters feature cold snowy weather, significantly limiting your transportation and activities. January and February are especially stormy. But winters open up some bucket list opportunities like observing the Northern Lights or visiting the best ice caves. You need to visit both in summer and winter to truly experience Iceland.

Hotel Vík í Mýrdal is a stylish modern 3-star hotel located right in the village of Vík í Mýrdal, perfectly situated for exploring the South region of Iceland.

The hotel rooms are modern and quite comfortable with views of the black-sand beach on one side and mountain hills on the other. The hotel has a great restaurant with an incredible buffet breakfast and a fine dining experience in the evening. It also features a stylish bar and a fitness center.

We personally were surprised by the quality of service and attention to detail during our stay, making it a pretty good value for money.

The hotel's location serves as a perfect base for exploring the South region – the Reynisfjara Beach, Dyrhólaey, and Solheimasandur Plane Wreck are all 10-20 minutes away. And pretty much all the tours to the Katal Ice Cave also depart from this town.
