Stuðlagil Canyon is a not-so-hidden gem known for its stunning basalt columns and vibrant blue-green river. It was carved by glacial meltwater and features steep walls lined with striking hexagonal basalt formations that create a dramatic and photogenic landscape. The contrast between the dark basalt and the turquoise water of the Jökla River makes this canyon one of the most visually captivating spots in Iceland, perfect for those seeking natural beauty away from the more crowded attractions. To explore Stuðlagil Canyon, hike along a well-marked trail that leads to the canyon's edge, offering stunning viewpoints of the rock formations and river below. The hike is either 1 or 2 miles long each way, depending on where you park. Along the way, you’ll find several spots to take in the views and capture photographs of the canyon's unique geology. TIP: There are two parking lots — one before the bridge (West Side parking) and another after the bridge up the canyon (Klaustrusel). Save yourself an hour of uneventful walking by parking at the second parking where the actual trail begins. But you better arrive before 10 am during summer months to have a spot at the second parking. As always, simply tap the "directions" button, and it will take you to the right place.
