Gifford Homestead is a historic pioneer home located in the Fruita Historic District of Capitol Reef National Park. Gifford Homestead

Goblin Valley

Hickman Natural Bridge is a popular hiking destination in Capitol Reef National Park, known for its stunning geological features and scenic beauty. The trail to Hickman Natural Bridge is a moderate 2-mile long. The hike starts from a parking area along Scenic Drive and follows the canyon bottom upstream.

Lower Calf Creek Falls is a stunning waterfall located in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The trail to the falls is 6 miles round trip and follows Calf Creek through a scenic canyon.

You can swim in the pool beneath the falls, so we recommend grabbing your bathing suite for quite a refreshing experience in hot summer days.

To reach the overlook, you have to drive along the unpaved Cathedral Valley Loop Road, which is recommended for high-clearance vehicles. The overlook itself is perched atop a rocky outcrop, and you can take in sweeping vistas of Cathedral Valley and the nearby Henry Mountains. 

The best times to visit the overlook are early morning and late afternoon, when the light is most favorable for photography and the temperatures are more moderate.

However, you should be prepared for changing weather conditions and extreme temperatures, especially during the summer months. Bright Angel Trail

Havasu Falls is a stunning waterfall located on the Havasupai Indian Reservation in the Grand Canyon, known for its vibrant blue-green water that contrasts with the red rock of the canyon walls.

The hike to Havasu Falls is approximately 20 miles round trip and starting 2023, requires a campground or lodge permit from the Havasupai tribe to visit. You can also use a helicopter taxi ($85 per person) that is departing from the trailhead parking location on first come first serve basis.

The South Kaibab Trail is known for its breathtaking views and challenging terrain, making it a favorite among experienced hikers.

There are multiple versions of this trail, ranging from 2 to 15 miles roundtrip. We recommend going no further than the Skeleton Point as a day hike (6 miles roundtrip) because of a very steep descend afterwards. Check the AllTrails link for more details.

The trail begins near Yaki Point on the South Rim of the canyon and descends to the Colorado River. Along the way, you can expect to encounter steep drops, switchbacks, and narrow sections of the trail that are carved into the canyon walls. The trail provides incredible views from the start, so you can turn back at any point if you don't feel like completing the entire route.

Despite its difficulty, the South Kaibab Trail offers some of the best views in the Grand Canyon, including panoramas of the Inner Gorge and the Phantom Ranch area. You can also see geological formations like the O'Neill Butte and Cedar Ridge, as well as wildlife such as mule deer and California condors.

While the trail is accessible year-round, we recommend to hike in the spring and fall when temperatures are cooler. Come prepared with plenty of water and snacks, as there is no potable water along the trail.

South Kaibab Trail

The South Rim Trail is a scenic walking trail that runs for approximately 13 miles along the rim of the Grand Canyon's South Rim. It offers breathtaking views of the canyon, including some of its most iconic landmarks, such as Mather Point, Yavapai Point, and Hopi Point. Hoover Dam is an iconic monument – concrete arch-gravity dam located on the border between the states of Arizona and Nevada. The dam was built during the Great Depression and completed in 1936. Driving through the dam is already a scenic experience, but you can also take guided tours of the Hoover Dam, which include a visit to the power plant, observation deck, and the surrounding area. There are also several hiking trails in the area, as well as opportunities for boating and fishing on Lake Mead, the reservoir created by the dam.

Valley of Fire State Park features stunning red sandstone formations, petroglyphs, and unique desert wildlife, and is conveniently located on the way from Las Vegas to Zion National Park.

There are several hiking trails to explore, as well as campsites, and picnic areas, and scenic drives. Some of the most popular spots to visit include Elephant Rock, Arch Rock, Fire Wave, and Atlatl Rock.

Valley Of Fire

Balanced Rock is a large sandstone boulder that sits precariously on a narrower pedestal, giving the appearance of being balanced. The total height of the formation is approximately 39 feet, with the boulder itself measuring about 55 feet in length. The pedestal is only about 3 feet in diameter and stands at a height of about 17 feet. Balanced Rock is a popular attraction in the park and can be seen from the road or from a nearby parking area. You can also take a short hike to get a closer look at the formation.

The formation is believed to have been created by natural erosion processes over millions of years. The harder sandstone rock at the top of the boulder is more resistant to erosion than the softer sandstone rock at the base. As the softer rock was gradually eroded away, the harder rock at the top was left balancing on the pedestal.

Balanced Rock

Dead Horse Point is a popular outdoor destination near Moab, featuring stunning views of the surrounding canyons and desert landscapes. We recommend stopping at the main overlook to take in the views, but if you have extra time there's plenty of short and long scenic hikes in the park.

The park gets its name from a local legend that states cowboys used the area to corral wild mustangs and then blocked off the only entrance, leaving them to die of thirst. Despite the morbid history, it is a great stop with incredible views.

Dead Horse Point

Delicate Arch is one of the most iconic natural arches in the world. The arch is made of Entrada Sandstone and stands 52 feet tall and 32 feet wide. The arch is free-standing and is the most famous feature of the park. Hiking to Delicate Arch is a popular activity, and the trail is 3 miles round trip with an elevation gain of about 480 feet. The trail starts at Wolfe Ranch and winds its way up a slickrock slope before arriving at the overlook for Delicate Arch. You can also hike down to the base of the arch for a closer look.

Delicate Arch is not only a natural wonder, but it is also a symbol of the American Southwest. It has been featured on Utah license plates and was even used as a backdrop for the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics. At sunset, the arch glows a brilliant orange-red color and is a stunning sight to behold. 

We recommend visiting is in the early morning or late afternoon when the lighting is optimal and crowds are little.

Delicate Arch

Devil's Garden is the best way to see most of the arches in one go. The trail is known for its unique rock formations, including sandstone arches, spires, and other geological wonders.

The trail can be hiked as an out-and-back, or as a loop that is roughly 7.2 miles in total length. The trail is rated as strenuous overall due to the uneven terrain, steep drops, and exposure to the elements. The first part of the trail is pretty easy and offers spectacular scenery, so you can turn back early if not feeling like it.

The Devil's Garden Trail takes you past several of the park's most famous arches, including Landscape Arch, Navajo Arch, Partition Arch, and Double O Arch. Along the way, hikers can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding canyonlands and red rock formations.

We recommend visiting outside of the hottest summer months, but if you ended up here in summer – bring plenty of water and good sun protection.

Devil’s Garden

Double Arch is another beautiful arch in the park. This impressive double arch is formed by two parallel arches that share a common end. The larger arch has a span of 144 feet and a height of 112 feet, making it one of the largest arches in the park.

Double Arch is accessible via a short, easy trail from the parking lot. The trail leads you to the base of the arches where you can admire their impressive size and take pictures. The arches were formed by erosion from water and ice, as well as from the stresses of gravity and weathering. 

You can also explore the area around the arches. Many people enjoy climbing on the sandstone formations. Double Arch is especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset when the colors of the sandstone formations are at their most vibrant.

Sand Dune Arch is a unique and picturesque spot, tucked away in a hidden sandstone alcove, surrounded by towering red rocks and sandy trails. To reach the arch, you can take a short, easy hike through a narrow slot canyon and then scramble up a steep sand dune to reach the arch itself.

Once at the arch, you can walk underneath it and explore the sandy alcove. The arch provides some shade on hot days and is a great spot for photos. You can also continue past the arch to explore the nearby landscape, which includes more sand dunes, rock formations, and hiking trails.

Butler Wash Ruins is an archaeological site that consists of a group of well-preserved ancient structures that were built by the Ancestral Puebloans over 700 years ago. The site is located near the edge of a sandstone mesa and offers spectacular views of the surrounding canyonlands.

The main attraction at Butler Wash Ruins is a hike that takes you through the ancient structures and around the nearby rock formations. You can see how the Ancestral Puebloans constructed their buildings using local sandstone, and how they incorporated the natural features of the landscape into their design. There are several different trails that you can choose from, depending on your level of fitness and the amount of time you have available.

The site is also home to a small museum, which features exhibits about the history and culture of the Ancestral Puebloans who once lived in the area.

Goosenecks State Park is a beautiful and unique natural wonder located in San Juan County in Utah. House on Fire is a popular photography destination located in the South Fork of Mule Canyon. It is named for the striking resemblance the rock formations have to a house on fire when the sunlight hits it just right. The ruins themselves are not very large, but they are still a fascinating piece of history to behold.

The hike to House on Fire is roughly 2.5 miles round-trip and is considered a moderate hike with some scrambling and steep sections. The trail is well-marked and leads hikers through the beautiful Mule Canyon, surrounded by towering red rock cliffs.

John Ford Point is a popular viewpoint in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, named after the famous Hollywood director who filmed many western movies in the area.
