I’d keep Camp in the dunes in mind for a stay in Sand Dunes.

More about this place

Camp in the Dunes is the National Park Service campground inside Great Sand Dunes National Park, offering tent and RV sites directly within the dune field at Piñon Flats — one of the most extraordinary places to sleep in the American West. The setting is unlike any other campground: surrounded by the tallest dunes in North America, with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains rising behind.

The campground has potable water, flush toilets, fire rings, and picnic tables — basic but adequate. There's no electricity or hookups. Medano Creek flows just steps from many sites in spring and early summer. The night skies here are exceptional, designated as one of Colorado's official Dark Sky parks.

Waking up inside the dune field before the gates open to day visitors, with the morning light raking across the sand, is an experience that no hotel stay can replicate. The campground's 88 sites fill up fast — reservations through recreation.gov are essential from April through October.

It's the right choice for campers, stargazers, and anyone who wants maximum immersion in the dune landscape. Not for those who need amenities, but for those who don't mind roughing it, the setting is unbeatable.
